The last testament of Lucky Luciano by Martin A Gosch( Book )

29 editions published between 1975 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 1,262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The only account of the life of the man known as the "Boss of Bosses." Charles "Lucky" Luciano was an Italian-born, naturalized American mobster born in Sicily. Luciano is considered the father of modern organized crime in the United States for splitting New York City into five different Mafia crime families and the establishment of the first Commission. He was, along with his associate Meyer Lansky, instrumental in the development of the National Crime Syndicate in the United States. Lucky Luciano's posthumous memoirs may well have cost him his life. The partner of Meyer Lanksy and Bugsy Siegel, the man who created and controlled the "Commission" and the set down the rules, wanted to have his side of the story on record. It turns out that most of Luciano's criminal activity coincides with the history of the Mafia in America in the first half of the twentieth century and beyond. In preparation for a film of his life story, the famous New York gangster living in a golden exile in Naples recounted the main incidents of his life to producer Martin A. Gosch. Back in the United States, the new leaders of the Mafia were not pleased about the project that had almost reached completion and was ready to be turned into a screenplay. It is almost certain that their displeasure was communicated to "Charlie Lucky" with a hint to forget about the idea altogether. But Luciano went ahead anyway, compelled by the need to tell all and in some way offer an explanation about a life of crime. After taking a sip of espresso coffee at Naples airport as he waited for Gosch to land, Luciano died of a massive heart attack. Or was it something else? The film was never made, so this book remains the only account of the life of the man known as the "Boss of Bosses."

The Thursday Club is tough, hard-hitting, suspenseful fiction, one of those rare novels about cops that reads like the real thing. It begins with the discovery of a body in a Staten Island garbage dump - the body of a woman killed and buried over twenty-five years ago. Hardly an event that seems likely to stir up much interest in the Big Apple, where more recent victims are a dime a dozen, particularly since this body is that of an unknown black female who may have been
Blood from a stone : the quest for the life diamonds by Yaron Svoray( Book )

7 editions published between 2003 and 2015 in English and held by 373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

They were known as Life Diamonds--rough uncut diamonds of high quality bought by Jews in Eastern Europe to use as passports to safety. After 1939 and the Nazi blitzkrieg, after the extermination camps began belching black smoke into the skies and the railroad station at Auschwitz II-Birkenau became the busiest train station in the world, they became Death Diamonds. Blood from a Stone is the amazing story of forty of those diamonds, of their journey across continents and oceans, from the mines of South Africa to the diamond centers in Antwerp and Amsterdam, to the Jews of Eastern Europe, to the Death Camps ... and to the two American soldiers who liberated them from the SS, finally, and buried them in a forest in Alsace on the border between France and Germany. It is the story of the curse believed to lie over the fabulous wealth of these stones, bringing death and disaster to all who touched them. It is the story of Yaron Svoray, who spent more than a decade in search of one small foxhole somewhere in a thousand square miles of forest ... and of his unbelievable success
