From the time of her husband's death at the Battle of the Little Big Horn until her own death fifty-seven years later, at the age of ninety, Mrs. George Armstrong Custer devoted herself to defending or embellishing her husband's reputation. This account, the second in Elizabeth's trilogy of her life with the General, focuses on the period immediately following the Civil War, when the Custers were stationed in Louisiana, Texas, and Kansas. She portrays the aftermath of the Civil War in Texas and life in Kansas while her husband took part in General Winfield Hancock's 1867 expedition against the Indians between the Arkansas and Platte rivers. Throughout, she provides detailed descriptions of an army officer's home life on the frontier during this major period of Indian unrest

The personal letters of General Custer and his wife Elizabeth Bacon, are well worth reading for their picture of frontier army life and for tracing Custer's career on the western plains. Boots and saddles : or, Life in Dakota with General Custer by Elizabeth Bacon Custer( )

18 editions published between 1975 and 2008 in English and held by 458 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"While it is well known that General George Armstrong Custer [1839-1876] died in the Battle of Little Big Horn in the summer of 1876, much less is known of the day-to-day life of an officer serving at frontier forts during the heyday of the old wild west. In this volume, written while the memories were still fresh in her mind, Mrs. Custer describes her life on the frontier with her famous husband. She presents a fascinating account of garrison life at isolated posts in the Dakota Territory, and describes the hardships and tragedies experienced. She also gives some insights into the character of the men of the famed Seventh Cavalry Regiment which met its fate at Little Big Horn. The main text is supplemented with an appendix giving extracts from letters General Custer wrote to his wife during his Yellowstone expedition of 1873, from the Black Hills in 1874, and from Yellowstone in 1876"--Back paper cover
