Archimedes : what did he do besides cry eureka? by Sherman K Stein( Book )

12 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 1,042 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Many people have heard of two things about Archimedes: he was the greatest mathematician of antiquity and he ran from his bath crying, "Eureka, eureka!" few of us, layperson or mathematician are familiar with the accomplishments on which his reputation rests. This book answers the questions by describing in detail his astonishing accomplishments: how he developed the theory of the lever and the center of gravity; how he used the center of gravity to study whether a floating object would tip over; how he summed a geometric series and the squares; and how he found the volume and surface area of a sphere. His ability to do so much with the few tools at his disposal is astonishing. - Publisher
Strength in numbers : discovering the joy and power of mathematics in everyday life by Sherman K Stein( Book )

19 editions published between 1996 and 2011 in English and Chinese and held by 931 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The world around us. And while the relevance of math to everyday life is emphasized, the author's lively survey of such intriguing concepts as "hot" and "cool" numbers, as well as brain-teasers like the puzzle of the Egyptian rope, make Strength in Numbers rich reading. With his engaging style, Stein offers a new appreciation for the amazing properties of mathematics, from the beauty of its logic ("as inevitable and memorable as a Mozart symphony") to its power and
Algebra and tiling : homomorphisms in the service of geometry by Sherman K Stein( Book )

18 editions published between 1994 and 2014 in English and held by 731 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Carus Mathematical Monographs are an expression of the desire of Mrs. Mary Hegeler Carus and of her son, Dr. Edward H. Carus, to contribute to the dissemination of mathematical knowledge by making accessible at nominal cost a series of expository presentations of the best thoughts and keenest researches in pure and applied mathematics. The publication of the first four of these monographs was made possible by Mrs. Carus as sole trustee of the Edward C. Hegeler Trust Fund. The sales from these have resulted in the Carus Monograph Fund, and the Mathematical Association of America has used this as a revolving book fund to publish the succeeding monographs. The expositions of mathematical subjects that the monographs contain are set forth in a manner comprehensible not only to teachers and students specializing in mathematics, but also to scientific workers in other fields. More generally, the monographs are intended for the wide circle of thoughtful people familiar with basic graduate or advanced undergraduate mathematics, encountered in the study of mathematics itself or in the context of related disciplines, who wish to extend their knowledge without prolonged and critical study of the mathematical journals and treatises. -- from dust jacket

Equally appealing to beginners and to the mathematically adept, this book bridges the humanities and sciences to explore applications behind computers, cell phones, measurement of astronomical distance, cell growth, and other areas. Eight fascinating examples show how understanding certain topics in advanced mathematics requires nothing more than arithmetic and common sense. Each chapter begins with a question about strings consisting of nothing more than two letters, and every such question raises intriguing problems to be explored and solved. Author Sherman Stein proceeds at a measured pace that permits readers to move through the chapters in a leisurely fashion, omitting none of the steps. His approach makes complex subjects — from topology to set theory to probability — both accessible and exciting
