From the Publisher: For Frank Stella, 1958 was a crucial year. After graduating from Princeton University, he moved to Manhattan and painted a series of monumental, colorful canvases that culminated in the first of his famous "black paintings." This fascinating book focuses on the thirty works he painted that year. The paintings reflect his transformation from a student experimenting with abstract expressionism to a highly original artist whose works changed the course of postwar art. Presenting the entire series of paintings in color for the first time (except lost works known only through black-and-white photographs), this handsome book details the course of Stella's career in 1958. The authors situate his work in relation to that of Carl Andre, with whom Stella shared studio space that year, and Jasper Johns. Their analysis draws on concepts of originality, repetition, assemblage, and optimality. Drawing on new archival findings, firsthand observations of the paintings, and interviews with Stella and members of his circle, this volume enriches our understanding of a fascinating and critical stage in the artist's development
Who gets to call it art? : the legend of Henry Geldzahler, 1935-1994 by Peter Rosen( Visual )

3 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Henry Geldzahler (1935-94), star curator and cultural impresario, lived a life worth examining. The first curator of the Department of 20th-Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum, first director of visual arts for the National Endowment of the Arts, and the first full-time commissioner of cultural affairs for New York City, his landmark 1969 show at the Metropolitan is still remembered with awe. "New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970" filled 35 galleries with more than 400 groundbreaking works of contemporary art. This film is not a full biographical examination of this singular figure's life, but rather a portrait in profile, as many of 'his' artists talk about Geldzahler and what his friendship meant to them

Frank Stella : Irregular polygons, 1965-66 by Brian P Kennedy( Book )

4 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume provides an overview of the development of shaped paintings (paintings that are not square or rectangular in format) and details American painter Frank Stella's (b. 1936) contribution to art in the early and mid 1960s. Although based on simple geometries, the works in this book constitutes some of the most complex artistic statements of Frank Stella's career. The eleven compositions combine different numbers of shapes to create daringly irregular outlines. Stella made four versions of each composition, varying the color combinations. They mark a radical shift from the artist's earlier striped works in their use of large fields of color. The asymmetric canvases play with illusion, confronting Stella's previous emphasis on flatness while anticipating his career-long exploration of space and volume in both painting and sculpture

Showcasing works from all of his major series, the book surveys the full sweep of Stella's career, from his artistic beginnings in high school and college to today. The plates section comprises more than 100 works, including paintings, sculptures, reliefs, and works on paper. Notable inclusions are his seminal Black Paintings, recent high-relief aluminum works, and a selection of drawings, maquettes, and digital renderings--many of which are reproduced here for the first time--that offer fresh insight into Stella's thinking and process. Essays discuss topics such as the artist's early years at Phillips Academy in Andover and Princeton University, and his late-career architectural pieces created with the aid of computer software. An interview with Stella conducted by American painter Laura Owens allows Stella to illuminate his artistic practice in his own words. Additional resources include a chronology with extensive bibliographic and exhibition references
