The works in the volume are those exhibited in the Whitney Museum's American Pop Art survey - the first major retrospective exhibit of this exhilarating contemporary art whose principal themes are taken from advertising, comic strips, motion pictures, and other forms of popular culture. The combination of Alloway's brilliant exposition and the one-hundred-and-five illustrations, ten in color, provides an illuminating experience, a visualization and understanding of this complex, exciting, typically American art movement. -- from dust jacket

The pictographs of Adolph Gottlieb by Adolph Gottlieb( Book )

13 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paintings created between 1941 and 1953 by Adolph Gottlieb, which he labeled Pictographs, were an early and important breakthrough in American art. Typically defined by their use of pictographic symbols, compartmented structure, and momentous content, they are among the first successful efforts by an American of his generation to create works of art that were informed by, yet independent of, the art of their European contemporaries. The series contains a wealth of formal and conceptual ideas, which remained central to American paintings throughout the 1940s and 1950s and continue to echo in the work of today's artists. The Pictographs of Adolph Gottlieb, published in conjunction with an exhibition seen at The Phillips Collection, The Portland Museum of Art, Maine, The Brooklyn Museum, and The Arkansas Art Center, provides the first comprehensive survey of an important body of work produced by one of the seminal figures of Abstract Expressionism, who was also one of the most influential and successful artists of his generation. It presents sixty-five works in full-page color plates, chosen from more than three hundred in the series; many of them have not been reproduced in fifty years, and some are seen here for the first time. It also includes an intriguing array of essays by eminent scholars and critics exploring every aspect of the subject
Alex Katz paints Ada by Robert Storr( Book )

9 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For almost fifty years, the American artist Alex Katz (b. 1927) has painted a series of portraits of his wife, Ada. This beautifully illustrated book is the first to focus on these iconic paintings, which are unprecedented in their focus on a single figure over many years." "In this volume, leading scholars explore the allure of Ada as a subject and the art-historical importance of Katz's portraits, asking fascinating questions about Katz's methods and intentions: What do these paintings reveal and conceal about their subject? What does Katz do in the studio to convey such vitality on his canvases? How does Katz's work fit into the history of portraiture and the art movements of the 1960s and beyond? Acclaimed art critic and curator Robert Storr examines Ada's alluring persona, comparing her to other "goddesses" who have captivated centuries of portrait painters. James Schuyler recounts a day in Katz's studio, and the late British art critic Lawrence Alloway explores the role of repetition in the Ada portraits, which he views as a cycle of images with antecedents in Velazquez and Rembrandt." "Featuring the renowned series of Ada portraits, this book demonstrates the cumulative power and enduring delight of Alex Katz's achievement, as well as his devotion to his greatest muse."--BOOK JACKET
