The end of education by Geoffrey Atheling Wagner( Book )

8 editions published in 1976 in English and Italian and held by 442 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The paradox of American higher education today is that the liberal well-wisher has done more than anyone in the past decade to destroy the university. Although he imagines himself in the vanguard of progress, this guilt-ridden figure is in fact contributing to what he thinks he is opposing, turning out ever more appropriate minions of technology, and committing, in the process, so much humanistic suicide. This criticism is directed chiefly at the belief system of the large, publicly-funded multiversity and the death wish of the academic liberals within it. Symptoms of this syndrome are the collapse of the cirriculum as each new generation of students takes it over, the adulation of the student by faculty wanting good evaluations and by the politically sensitive boards of education, and the farce of grading. Selected writings by Gérard de Nerval( Book )

12 editions published between 1957 and 1970 in English and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gerard de Nerval (1808-1855), a contemporary of Poe, De Quincey, Gogol and Heine, introduced into French literature a mode of writing rooted in German romanticism yet already recognizably modernist in its explorations of the uncertain borderlines between dream and reality, irony and madness, autobiography and fiction." "This selection of writings - the first such comprehensive gathering to appear in English - provides an overview of Nerval's work as a poet, belletrist, short-story writer and autobiographer. In addition to 'Aurelia', the memoir of his madness, 'Sylvie' (considered a 'masterpiece' by Proust), and the hermetic sonnets of 'The Chimeras', this volume includes Nerval's Doppelganger tales and experimental fictions. Selections from his correspondence demonstrate a lucid awareness of the strategies by which nineteenth-century psychiatry consigned his visionary imagination to the purgatory of mental illness."--Jacket

Les fleurs du mal : the complete text of The flowers of evil by Charles Baudelaire( Book )

5 editions published between 1922 and 1947 in English and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The poetic masterpiece of the great nineteenth-century writer Charles Baudelaire, The Flowers of Evil is one of the most frequently read and studied works in the French language. In this compelling new translation of Baudelaire's most famous collection, Keith Waldrop recasts the poet's original French alexandrines and other poetic arrangements into versets, a form that hovers between poetry and prose. Maintaining Baudelaire's complex view of sound and structure, Waldrop's translation mirrors the intricacy of the original without attempting to replicate its inimitable verse. The result is a powerful new re-imagining, one that is, almost paradoxically, closer to Baudelaire's own poetry than any previous English translation. Including the six poems banned from the first edition, this Flowers of Evil preserves the complexity, eloquence, and dark humor of its author. Brought here to new life, it is hypnotic, frank, and forceful."--Publisher's website
