Reading - which approach? by Vera Southgate( Book )

11 editions published between 1970 and 1979 in English and Danish and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this book is to help teachers to select reading materials and equipment for classroom use. Part 1 explains the objectives and defines the terminology to be used. Part 2, Criteria for Assessing Reading Approaches, places before the reader many of the factors which influence children's reading progress. The factors include the reading task itself, the learner, the teacher, and the learning situation. The two most important factors are considered to be the teacher's own basic beliefs about reading and the needs of the children at each stage of learning to read. An appraisal of reading approaches based on these factors was outlined in Part 2. In Part 3, nine current approaches to reading are examined and divided into three main divisions of look-and-say, phonic, and use of other media, including the Initial Teaching Alphabet, Words in Colour, and Colour Story Reading. The authors concluded that no one approach to reading can be considered as the ideal choice in every situation, but that the teacher who has considered the criteria of selection and made the necessary decisions as suggested should succeed in selecting the most appropriate approach for her use. A bibliography and tables of The Vocabulary of Five Look-and-Say Reading Schemes are included. (Aw)

Extending Beginning Reading was a research project based at the School of Education, University of Manchester, England, from September 1973 to December 1977. The project, aimed at helping readers seven years and older improve their reading skills, is detailed in this book, in which most of the seven sections contain implications for teachers. The book begins with background information on the project. Part 2 discusses the questions to which the research was directed, such as, What is reading? How do children learn to read? What skills are used in reading? And, What can the teacher do to help? Part 3 contains the teachers' viewpoints, including their preferred outcomes of the project and their aims and objectives. Part 4 emphasizes the growing importance of the reading environment and investigates this environment in eight schools. Part 5 deals with teachers of reading, including their estimates of children's reading ability, the books they use, their methods, their encouragement and training of children to use reading skills, and the results of their guidance on children's book choices. Part 6 discusses children as readers, including what children think about reading, children's views on books, reading and related assessments, and strategies children use in reading (miscue analysis and the cloze procedure). Part 7 presents the main project findings and recommendations for a more effective reading program. The appendixes contain materials used in the project, including tables of findings and lists of related publications. (El)
