Incidents of travel in Yucatan by John L Stephens( Book )

277 editions published between 1841 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 2,415 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new edition brings the best of both Stephens's narrative and Catherwood's drawings into a single volume with an added selection of photographs - many never before published - that expand a reader's view of the Maya ruins, the cities and scenes along the journey, and the native peoples whose cultures endure today. The illustrations include nineteenth-century scenes by the renowned photographer Eadweard Muybridge, portraits of Guatemalan Indians from the Smithsonian's Emilio Herbruger collection, and Osbert Salvin's early photos of Copan. More recent photographs of Guatemala by Jacques and Parney VanKirk and of the Lacandon in Mexico by Gertrude Duby Blom capture the timeless nature of the lands of the Maya that persists into the twentieth century
Incidents of travel in Egypt, Arabia Petraea, and the Holy Land by John L Stephens( Book )

116 editions published between 1837 and 2014 in 3 languages and held by 1,101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Stephens's travels in the Middle East and Central America resulted in books that created a storm of scholarly and popular interest in these regions during the 19th century. Due to ill health, Stephens left New York in 1834 and travelled through Europe for the next two years, extending his travels to Egypt and Syria. On returning to New York in 1837, he published this work under the name of George Stephens, an account of the author's year-long journey through the Middle East. With detailed observations of the Pyramids, temple of Karnak, red-rock city of Petra, along with accounts of a Turkish bath, a night in a tomb and Arab hospitality and customs. The author followed this work with the publication of "Incidents of Travel in Greece, Turkey, Russia and Poland", 1838. Stephens is credited with the discovery of the Mayan ruins in Central America and wrote two volumes on his explorations. --"John Lloyd Stephens"
