Controversial issues in child development by Doria Pilling( Book )

14 editions published between 1978 and 1979 in English and Undetermined and held by 742 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This review of child development research (primarily British and American) is organized around three major themes: the parental role and women's liberation; the role of educators in enhancing or hindering the life chances of pupils; and the problems of disadvantagement and the feasibility of intervention to prevent, minimize or eliminate its long term consequences for children's development. The subjects chosen for review are: (1) the impact of very early life experiences (social attachments, early environmental experiences, and quality of interaction between children and their caretakers) on development; (2) the effects of sharing the care of young children during the infancy, preschool and school age stages of development; (3) the role of the father in the family; (4) the effects of teachers' expectations on pupils' performance; and (5) effects of disadvantagement and intervention on the health and intelligence of young children. Born illegitimate: social and educational implications by Eileen Crellin( Book )

9 editions published between 1971 and 1977 in English and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study reported in this book provides descriptive material about a national sample of illegitimate children born in Great Britain in 1958. It compares their development with legitimate children who were born in the same week as they were, and it relates their development, at the age of seven years, to a range of factors linked with their birth history as well as with their mothers' social and personal background. Part I provides a brief review of the most relevant major studies carried out previously. Part ii looks at the mothers' circumstances before and during pregnancy, as well as at the conditions which prevailed at birth and during the first month of the child's life. In Part iii, the children's development at the age of seven years is described and compared with that of their peers. Part iv provides an overview and some suggestions for the future. The appendix contains statistics and a description of the sample and its identification, notes and statistical tests for the main text tables, and tables not included in the text. (Author/SB)

Four years on; a follow-up study at school leaving age of children formerly attending a traditional and a progressive junior school by Stan Gooch( Book )

17 editions published between 1965 and 1967 in English and Undetermined and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beginning in 1956 about 250 students in two London, England junior schools were intensively studied over a 4-year period for intellectual, educational, emotional, and social development. The schools approached instruction differently; one was child-oriented; the other was subject-oriented. In 1964 this followup study was conducted with some of the same students in the 1956 study who had gone into four secondary modern schools. The students selected for restudy had been of average or below-average reading ability in their junior school. Standardized tests and projective tasks were administered to these students. The measures were similar to those used in the 1956 study. Several questionnaires were completed. The student himself, an interviewer, a teacher, and his parents were informants. The followup data and the data from the 1956 study suggest that questions such as whether a child-centered or subject-centered approach achieve better results are so broad they are almost meaningless. The background and personality of the individual child are very important determinants of school achievement. The data also indicate that the projective tasks used in assessing the student's development are accurate. [Not available in hard copy due to marginal legibility of original document.] (Wd)
