Integrated education, a reader by Meyer Weinberg( Book )

8 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 569 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book consists of a selection from the articles, addresses and documents that have been published in the magazine "Integrated Education," comprising fifty items appearing between April, 1963 and September, 1967. The items are arranged in six sections. Part One is devoted to the general problem of educational deprivation, and to the question of making public schools into centers of opportunity while ridding them of racial inequality. The similarities and diversities of segregated education in the American metropolitan complexes are illustrated by the selections in Part Two, entitled "Places and Practices." Part Three, "Points at Issue," addresses itself to discussing the dimensions of change called for by the eradication of racism from educational systems, the simultaneous implementation of programs of instructional improvement and of integration, and the amount of authority over a public school that can be lodged in the hands of an organized community. Part Four, "Prospects for Change," considers the factors: professional reform, curriculum changes, innovative organizational change, legislation, and judicial doctrine. Research into desegregation, treated in Part Five, exemplifies explorations of aspects of school integration and urban education in general. The final section is devoted to the world scene in integrated education. (Rj)

Minority students : a research appraisal by Meyer Weinberg( Book )

8 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 467 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a comprehensive review of research on minority students and desegregation. An interdisciplinary approach which covers all major approaches to the problem and which presents contrasting viewpoints on school integration and minority student education is used. Effecting change in the classroom and the schools is the central concern of this book. Beyond the usual exclusive concern with subject areas which can be manipulated statistically, this tome includes the perspectives of historians, lawyers, economists, and even non-specialists. Factors treated at some length include the historical and legal background of the education of minority groups, the ideology of racism, a continuing reexamination and questioning of prevailing views of the role of social class and race in learning, and the impact of minority communities upon the schools. Separate chapters deal with Spanish-surnamed and American Indian students. The impact of schooling is examined in the areas of academic achievement, self-concept and aspirations, and the relationships of students with their peers and with their teachers. The findings presented in a conclusion to this work indicate that desegregation works for both white and black children. It narrows the achievement gap between them. In addition, minority children gain a more realistic conception of their vocational and educational future through integrated settings. Positive racial attitudes by black and white students develop as they attend school together. This book is a companion volume to another book titled, "a Chance to Learn" which includes fuller documentation on the historical and legal materials that are cited in this volume. (Author/AM)

The education of the minority child; a comprehensive bibliography of 10,000 selected entries by Meyer Weinberg( Book )

8 editions published between 1970 and 1971 in English and held by 448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This bibliography has been produced in association with the Center for Urban Studies of the University of Chicago for use in its project entitled "The Urban Negro American in the Twentieth Century." Central emphasis is on the black child; lesser stress is on Mexican American, Puerto Rican, and American Indian children; and some attention is given to children from Oriental, poor white, Jewish, and European Immigrant backgrounds. For black and American Indian children, references go back to the colonial period of American history. The great bulk of the book, however, reflects the literature of the past 70 years. Materials included bear on the child himself, the school, the immediate milieu, and the larger community. Ample note is taken of materials on the culture of various minority groups. (Author/JM)

Each of the twelve country-specific chapters begins with a description of the kind of education received in the home country, including how widely available it was, how equal or unequal the society was, and what the circumstances were under which the emigration of children from the country occurred. The latter part of each of these chapters deals with the education these children have received in the United States. Throughout the book, instead of dwelling on a relatively narrow range of children who perform spectacularly well, the author tries to discover the educational situation typical among average students. The order of chapters is roughly chronological in terms of when the first sizable numbers of immigrants came from a specific country
