To Profit or Not to Profit is a coordinated set of studies of why fund-raising for nonprofits is mimicking that of private firms and what consequences it is having. User fees and revenue from "ancillary" activities - those not contributing directly to the organization mission except for the profit generated - are mushrooming, with each having important side effects. User fees may price out of the market some of the nonprofit's target group. Ancillary activities may distract the nonprofit from its central mission. These issues are examined from two perspectives. One focuses on issues that apply to nonprofits generally. A second set of studies focuses on specific industries
Mission and money : understanding the university by Burton Allen Weisbrod( Book )

22 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and held by 592 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mission and Money goes beyond the common focus on elite universities and examines the entire higher education industry, including the rapidly growing for-profit schools. The sector includes research universities, four-year colleges, two-year schools, and non-degree-granting career academies. Many institutions pursue mission-related activities that are often unprofitable and engage in profitable revenue-raising activities to finance them. This book contains a good deal of original research on schools' revenue sources from tuition, donations, research, patents, endowments, and other activities. It considers lobbying, distance education, and the world market, as well as advertising, branding, and reputation. The pursuit of revenue, although essential to achieve the mission of higher learning, is sometimes in conflict with that mission itself. The tension between mission and money is also highlighted in the chapter on the profitability of intercollegiate athletics. The concluding chapter investigates implications of the analysis for public policy."--Publisher description

Economics and mental health by Richard G Frank( Book )

4 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper is concerned with the economics of mental health. We argue that mental health economics is like health economics only more so: uncertainty and variation in treatments are greater; the assumption of patient self-interested behavior is more dubious; response to financial incentives such as insurance is exacerbated; the social consequences and external costs of illness are formidable. We elaborate on these statements and consider their implications throughout the chapter. Special characteristics' of mental illness and persons with mental illness are identified and related to observations on institutions paying for and providing mental health services. We show that adverse selection and moral hazard appear to hit mental health markets with special force. We discuss the emergence of new institutions within managed care that address long-standing problems in the sector. Finally, we trace the shifting role of government in this sector of the health economy

Assessing the economic impact of transportation projects : how to choose the appropriate technique for your project by Glen E Weisbrod( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This Circular, published at the recommendation of the Transportation Research Board Committee on Transportation Economics, is a concise, comprehensive primer on how to best assess economic impacts of transportation projects. There is considerable confusion among public agencies and private groups regarding when and how to consider economic impacts in transportation decision-making. As a result, important considerations may be ignored and irrelevant factors considered. This primer is written for noneconomists. Its purpose is to help planners, engineers and decision-makers identify the appropriate ways to define questions regarding economic impacts of transportation and the appropriate methods to assess them. Its goal is not to make the reader an instant expert on economic evaluation, but to assist the reader to (1) identify the types of economic impacts that are relevant for decision-making, (2) define the appropriate project evaluation perspective, and (3) select relevant methods for analysis and presentation of findings
