Problems of youth: transition to adulthood in a changing world by Muzafer Sherif( Book )

20 editions published between 1965 and 2017 in English and held by 912 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book describes and analyzes, from an interdisciplinary point of view, those problems of youth that are currently objects of remedial action on both community and national levels. It explores the many causes of adolescent happiness and discontent, behavior and misbehavior, aspirations and aversions in the rapidly changing patterns of contemporary class, institutional, and cultural settings. It provides practical information for all professionals concerned with adolescent problems and affords small comfort to any who hopes for quick results.Problems of Youth first considers problems traditionally considered in youth research, discussing adolescent attitudes and goals within a broadly applicable theory of adolescent development. The second part concentrates on youth problems in terms of their dynamics in social and cultural settings undergoing change at different rates. The third part presents studies of youth in trouble, offering guidelines for new theoretical and empirical approaches and underscoring the need, to study individual youth problems within their socio-cultural and class frameworks. The final part attempts through research and measurement the major sources of influences affecting youth.Reflecting the position that there is a constant danger of viewing adolescence exclusively through the eyes of one's own specialty, the contributors to this volume take a cross-disciplinary approach to the subject, drawing on resources of other fields to expand the perspective of their particular area of specialization. In doing so, they offer all students of sociology, social psychology, and related disciplines a new, unified approach to the timely paradox of youth in transition with itself and with a world that is itself in transition."--Provided by publisher

Interdisciplinary relationships in the social sciences. by Muzafer Sherif( Book )

18 editions published between 1969 and 2017 in English and German and held by 819 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Interdisciplinary collaboration in the social sciences is obviously essential to scientific progress, but discontent and practical difficulties hinder collaboration in research and training. Many of the problems arise from the failure in the separate disciplines to understand the basis on which collaboration is necessary and possible. In an effort to shed light on the situation, these original essays by eminent scholars - economists, geographers, psychologists, political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, and others - demonstrate effective means of achieving interdisciplinary coordination in studying human behavior and delineating promising areas - for cooperative research. The book provides a sophisticated guide to the nature of knowledge in social science as applied to its core disciplines. Since the social sciences separately are studying and theorizing about many of the same kinds of human behavior, the contributors propose that scholars can avoid possible duplication of effort and increase the validity of their formulations by consulting the related findings and methodology from other disciplines before embarking on a research problem. The contributors maintain that this interchange, by broadening the total knowledge of each discipline, represents the best approach toward fulfilling the goals of social scientific inquiry. The individual chapters give valuable insight into the theoretical overlaps among the disciplines and outline specific research areas - such as group interaction, political attitudes, and intergroup relations - that require interdisciplinary cooperation to produce valid formulations. A major step toward creating a dialogue among disciplines, the book will enable every social scientist to understand more clearly the current state and future direction of interdisciplinary relationships and their indispensable future in social scientific thought

Events at thr place force Eadlyn to make an important--and impossible--choice, knowing that her Selection might not lead her to the fairytale ending her parents found twenty years ago. Attitude and attitude change; the social judgment-involvement approach by Carolyn W Sherif( Book )

23 editions published between 1965 and 1982 in English and held by 758 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book the social judgment-involvement approach to the study of attitude and attitude change are presented. The book outlines a systematic framework substantiated by a series of new research findings, many of them published previously. The approach has shaped itself gradually during the last thirty years, as authors have proceeded cautiously and, at times, slowly. At every step, the authors took stock of material from the research of others as well as theirs

The Robbers Cave experiment : intergroup conflict and cooperation by Muzafer Sherif( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 300 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this famous experiment, one of the earliest in inter-group relationships, two dozen twelve-year-old boys in summer camp were formed into two groups, the Rattlers and the Eagles, and induced first to become militantly ethnocentric, then intensely cooperative. Friction and stereotyping were stimulated by a tug-of-war, by frustrations perceived to be caused by the “out” group, and by separation from the others. Harmony was stimulated by close contact between previously hostile groups and by the introduction of goals that neither group could meet alone. The experiment demonstrated that conflict and enmity between groups can be transformed into cooperation and vice versa and that circumstances, goals, and external manipulation can alter behavior. Some have seen the findings of the experiment as having implications for reduction of hostility among racial and ethnic groups and among nations, while recognizing the difficulty of control of larger groups."--Publisher's description

The G. Stanley Hall lecture series by American Psychological Association( Book )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The five papers that comprise this initial volume in the G. Stanley Hall Lecture Series differ other than in topic of coverage. While they all focus on the most recent literature on introductory courses in psychology, one emphasizes a few trends in considerable detail while another mentions many current investigations. The papers also differ widely in terms of their recommendations for classroom activities and demonstrations; some of the papers give these activities substantial emphasis, yet other papers provide little material of this kind. Still, these papers have much in common, and it is this commonality that is at the heart of the lecture series. These papers are more than mere reviews of the past five years' literature, they are integrative accounts of that literature. Each attempts to place its content area in the context of a survey introductory course, recognizing the limitations of coverage and understanding inherent in such a course. The black unrest : part of a social movement toward human rights by Muzafer Sherif( Book )

2 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Civil rights demonstrations, riots, and other collective manifestations of unrest in the black community should be viewed as a developing social movement rooted in certain background conditions of inequality. Previously negro leaders advocated attaining equal rights within the white power structure, but now the "motivational base" for the movement for equality has shifted to demands, especially from the black muslims, for dissociation from white standards and institutions and for an identification with other nonwhite peoples in their struggle for autonomy. Since the movement is shaped by increasingly urgent demands from the negro rank and file, their leaders have assumed an increasingly militant stand. And although it is characteristically divided into factions of conservative and militant groups, the movement has made effective gains toward the group solidarity necessary for "black power." White efforts to deal with the black community must recognize this new militant mood and the movement's leadership, however extreme. No token input of funds will now end the widespread dissatisfaction of the negro. He will realize his human rights when he gains full participation in the decision-making processes which have for so long determined his destiny, and when whatever existing white racism is eliminated. This invited address was prepared for the conference on the changing black community, organized by the pennsylvania human relations commission, ephrata, pennsylvania, february 5-8, 1968. (lb)
