L'euphorie des deux amis face à cette réussite laisse place au désarroi lorsqu'ils réalisent que l'argent est de la " goat monnaie ", des faux billets particulièrement bien imités. Edgar décide de mettre le nez dans les affaires du comte de Cagliostro, régent de la principauté du même nom, qu'il soupçonne d'être à la tête du réseau de faux-monnayage.
