Sigmund also documents the Reagan-era policy change from support for Pinochet to pressure for the return of democracy. He concludes that U.S.-Chilean relations have contributed significantly to an overall shift in U.S. foreign policy toward supporting democracy as an end in itself, rather than as a means to an end. Although U.S. policy will continue to be characterized by the interplay between self-interest and idealism, Sigmund contends, future administrations will find it impossible to ignore humanitarian concerns

Religious freedom and evangelization in Latin America : the challenge of religious pluralism( Book )

10 editions published between 1999 and 2009 in English and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his introduction, Paul Sigmund states that the growing religious pluralism in Latin America is one of several reasons why the trend toward democracy that has marked the last two decades may endure. Nevertheless, Sigmund notes that this new pluralism, particularly the growth of Protestantism, has led to tensions that must be resolved. Religious Freedom and Evangelization in Latin America provides an indispensable resource for understanding the range of issues confronting the continent, offering Catholic as well as Protestant perspectives, and trenchant analyses of the situation in different countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Cuba."--Jacket

This memorandum considers Soviet influence in Latin America in the 1960's and 1970's. In two countries, in particular, the tensions and contradictions of Soviet ideology and practice were demonstrated: Cuba and Chile. Both had relatively large and long-standing Communist parties. In both, Communist influence expanded suddenly and rapidly in ways which tested the Soviet Union's ability to respond both as a government and as a ideological center. At least from the vantage of the late 1970's those responses met with varying degrees of success which this memorandum attempts to evaluate. (Author)

3 editions published between 1987 and 1989 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In September 1973 a horrified French public discovered Latin American militarism in the unexpected form of terrorism in Chile. Even people on the left had been largely indifferent to the massacres in Djakarta, but so much had been said, pro and con, about the via Chilena in France that attempts were hastily made to exorcise this coup d'état that was not unusual but yet was different from what had happened in other countries. The dark continent-wide tide of a praetorianism that was novel only in its date and manner of execution ended by confirming our earlier views. We came to terms with the intolerable through a few simple ideas. The involvement of the International Telephone and Telegraph Company (ITT) obscured the vast number of underlying, more fundamental causes
