The United States and democracy in Chile by Paul E Sigmund( Book )

11 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 532 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Interrupted Only Twice since 1833, democracy in Chile suffered its greatest setback in 1973, when the Chilean armed forces led by Augusto Pinochet wrested power from the popularly elected Marxist president Salvador Allende in a military coup that ended in Allende's death. Seventeen years later, in March 1990, democracy was restored when Pinochet surrendered power to an elected president, Patricio Aylwin. Much international debate has focused on the extent of U.S. responsibility for these events. In The United States and Democracy in Chile, noted scholar Paul Sigmund steers a middle course, arguing that U.S. policy has been a significant, though not decisive, factor influencing recent Chilean political development

Religious freedom and evangelization in Latin America : the challenge of religious pluralism( Book )

10 editions published between 1999 and 2009 in English and held by 410 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In his introduction, Paul Sigmund states that the growing religious pluralism in Latin America is one of several reasons why the trend toward democracy that has marked the last two decades may endure. Nevertheless, Sigmund notes that this new pluralism, particularly the growth of Protestantism, has led to tensions that must be resolved. Religious Freedom and Evangelization in Latin America provides an indispensable resource for understanding the range of issues confronting the continent, offering Catholic as well as Protestant perspectives, and trenchant analyses of the situation in different countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Cuba."--Jacket

Soviet policy in Cuba and Chile by Paul E Sigmund( Book )

5 editions published between 1980 and 1983 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This memorandum considers Soviet influence in Latin America in the 1960's and 1970's. In two countries, in particular, the tensions and contradictions of Soviet ideology and practice were demonstrated: Cuba and Chile. Both had relatively large and long-standing Communist parties. In both, Communist influence expanded suddenly and rapidly in ways which tested the Soviet Union's ability to respond both as a government and as a ideological center. At least from the vantage of the late 1970's those responses met with varying degrees of success which this memorandum attempts to evaluate. (Author)
