Late-Quaternary environments of the United States by H. E Wright( )

34 editions published between 1979 and 1983 in English and held by 1,422 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To many, the Pleistocene Epoch, which constitutes the earlier and major part of the Quaternary Period, is synonymous with the glacial ages and is viewed as a time of dramatic environmental change. Although there now is abundant evidence that glaciations occurred not only during the Pleistocene but through much of the Tertiary Period as well, and therefore are more appropriately considered as late-Cenozoic phenomena
Late Quaternary environments of the Soviet Union by A. A Velichko( )

25 editions published between 1980 and 1984 in English and held by 1,354 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Translation from the Russian. 30 papers by various authors covering the time range from the last interglaciation through the various phases of the last glaciation and up to the present time, dealing not only with the history of ice sheet and mountain glaciation, but also with loess deposits and permafrost features of the periglacial areas, the complex history of the inland seas, the sequence of vegetation, the distribution of mammal and insect faunas, the development of human cultures, and the reconstruction of climatic changes
The Quaternary of the United States; a review volume for the VII Congress of the International Association for Quaternary Research by H. E Wright( Book )

34 editions published between 1965 and 2019 in English and French and held by 1,267 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This important volume reviews the status of investigations aimed at deciphering the geologic, biogeographic, and archaeological records for the Quaternary Era--the last million years of geologic time-for the area of continental United States. Over eighty Quaternary scientists have contributed to the fifty-five chapters divided into four main parts. Part 1 treats the areal geology, with emphasis on the stratigraphy of the glaciated areas east of the Rocky Mountains, unglaciated eastern and central United States, and western United States. Part 2 deals with biogeography: phytogeography and palynology, animal geography and evolution. Part 3 deals with archaeology prehistory in the northeastern states, southeastern states, plains, desert west, and Pacific Coast including Alaska. Part 4 covers many diverse Quaternary studies on--the continental shelves, isotope geochemistry, paleopedology, the geochemistry of some lake sediments, paleohydrology, glaciers and climate, volcanic-ash chronology, paleomagnetism, neo-tectonics, dendrochronology, and theoretical paleoclimatology. Originally published in 1965. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905
Global climates since the last glacial maximum by H. E Wright( )

21 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 1,257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traces the evolution of the global climate since the last period of glacial maximum approximately 18,000 years ago. Examines how changes in climate have transformed Earth's biomes in this period and how this change has influenced the evolution of life
The Patterned peatlands of Minnesota by H. E Wright( )

12 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 1,016 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The gradual accumulation of knowledge about Minnesota's patterned peatlands over the past century is a fascinating story in the history of the science of ecology. Minnesota has more peat than any other state except Alaska, and these peatlands exhibit one of the most remarkable displays of the complex adjustment of living organisms to their environment. The parallel growth of an appreciation of the complexity of peatland ecosystems and of the importance of preserving at least the best of each peatland type is an equally fascinating chapter in the expansion of environmental awareness in the United States."--BOOK JACKET. "Proposals to mine the peat for energy, combined with timber and mineral interest, stimulated an ambitious program of scientific study as well as debate over the peatlands' future. Research conducted during the past decade has unraveled many secrets of this intricate ecosystem - a unique ecosystem because it has been so little altered by human action since its development thousands of years ago. The Patterned Peatlands of Minnesota is a significant contribution to the current understanding of the ecology, hydrology, and socioeconomic history of Minnesota peatlands, and provides important perspectives for both development and preservation of peatlands wherever they may occur."--Jacket

North America and adjacent oceans during the last deglaciation( Book )

7 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 566 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most Quaternary sediments in North America north of 45°N post-date the last deglaciation. This volume looks at those extensive deposits from the standpoints of timing, cause, and mechanism of the wastage of North American ice during the last deglaciation and the accompanying environmental changes in the nonglaciated and deglaciated areas. It particularly examines the mechanisms by which a mass of ice equivalent to 100 m of global sea-level was returned to the ocean within about 8,000 years
