The importance of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) to Jewish people through the years is presented in this documentary. Over scenes of rehearsals, concerts and touring, Zubin Mehta, Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, Leonard Bernstein, and others talk about their experiences working with the orchestra and its history. Early successes are recalled with Toscanini, Koussevitzky, Munch, Monteux, and others, but not until Mehta came in 1961 did the orchestra begin to acquire its own style. Due to the special relationship between Mehta and the IPO, he was made music director for life in 1981. The Israeli audience is described as very knowledgeable, demanding and critical. Concertmaster Chaim Taub and other orchestra members talk about playing in the IPO
