Illustrated glossary of architecture, 850-1830 by John Harris( Book )

33 editions published between 1966 and 1978 in English and held by 976 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The intention of the Illustrated Glossary is to provide a book utilizing modern scholarship and vocabulary and being, at the same time, visually attractive. The authors have followed the principle that the succinct definition of a term requires a standard of accuracy that few line drawings can maintain. They have therefore gathered together a corpus of magnificent photographs so that a definition may be illustrated by detail shown in relation to the whole facade or part. They have tried to define terms of architecture in general use for the study of British architecture until about 1830. Students of Anglo-Saxon, Georgian, or American Colonial architecture may not find certain vernacular terms, gut generally they will find the glossary of considerable value

"This book documents the break-up, sale, and re-use of salvages in Britain and America, where the fashion for so-called 'Period Rooms' became a mainstay of the transatlantic trade. Much appreciated by museum visitors, period rooms have become something of a scholarly embarrassment, as research reveals that many were assembled from a variety of sources. One American embraced the trade as no other - the larger-than-life William Randolph Hearst - who purchased tens of thousands of architectural salvages between 1900 and 1935"--Jacket
