9 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 623 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Allen Forte uses modern analytical procedures to explore the large repertoire of beautiful love songs written during the heyday of American musical theater, the Big Bands, and Tin Pan Alley. Covering the work of such songwriters as Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, and Harold Arlen, he seeks to illuminate this extraordinary music indigenous to America by revealing its deeper organizational characteristics. In so doing, he aims to establish it as a unique corpus of music that deserves more intensive study and appreciation by scholars and connoisseurs in the broader fields of American popular music and jazz
The atonal music of Anton Webern by Allen Forte( Book )

11 editions published between 1998 and 2014 in English and held by 597 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Austrian composer Anton Webern (1883-1945) is one of the major figures of musical modernism. His mature works comprise two styles: the so-called free atonal music composed between 1907 and 1924, and the twelve-tone serial music that began in 1924 and extended through the remainder of his creative life. In this book an eminent music theorist presents the first systematic and in-depth study of the early atonal works, from the George Lieder, opus 3, through the Latin Canons, opus 16

Moses und Aron by Arnold Schoenberg( )

6 editions published between 1984 and 1994 in German and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Schoenberg's masterpiece in the twelve-tone system he developed was his unfinished opera, a vastly complex work based on a single tone row that it remained a fragment may be essential to its spiritual message, for while Schoenberg never stated it explicitly, it would seem that he left this most ambitious project of his mature style incomplete on purpose

Syntax-based analytic reading of musical scores by Allen Forte( Book )

5 editions published between 1966 and 1967 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As part of a larger research project in musical structure, a program was written which 'reads' scores encoded in an input language isomorphic to music notation. The program is believed to be the first of its kind. From a small number of parsing rules the program derives complex configurations, each of which is associated with a set of reference points in a numerical representation of a time-continuum. The logical structure of the program is such that all and only the defined classes of events are represented in the output. Because the basis of the program is syntactic (in the sense that parsing operations are performed on formal structures in the input string), many extensions and refinements can be made without excessive difficulty. The program can be applied to any music which can be represented in the input language. At present, however, it constitutes the first stage in the development of a set of analytic tools for the study of so-called atonal music. The program and the approach to automatic data-structuring may be of interest to linguists and scholars in other fields concerned with basic studies of complex structures produced by human beings.
