People of the First Crusade by Michael Foss( Book )

19 editions published between 1997 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 922 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this work Michael Foss casts light on the reality of and motives behind the Crusades in general, and in particular the First Crusade, which set the tone for all those that followed. As the eleventh century came to an end, the Christian lands of Western Europe were in trouble. Afflicted by repeated invasions from the north, by the collapse of internal order and safety, by the increasing laxity and ignorance of the clergy, and by the unrestrained tyranny of the feudal lords, life in the West was, as one philosopher described it, "nasty, brutish, and short." To make matters worse, the Seljuk Turks, recently converted to Islam, had overrun the Holy Land. Pope Urban II, searching for a way out of the increasing anarchy and to rid himself of unruly, marauding knights, exhorted the faithful, at the Council of Clermont in 1095, to free Jerusalem from the Infidels. The response was immediate and enthusiastic. Proud knights, poor peasants, artisans armed with pikes and bows and arrows - and often only sticks or clubs - set out on the great adventure, fighting or negotiating their way through strange, exotic lands, until, four long years later, the ragged remnants of the once proud army stood below the forbidding walls of Jerusalem. Michael Foss tells the stories of these men and women of the First Crusade, often in their own words, bringing the time and events to life. --From publisher's description

The search for Cleopatra by Michael Foss( Book )

14 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in English and Japanese and held by 638 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cleopatra was a descendant not of pharaohs but of the Macedonian rulers who succeeded after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C.E. The dynasty founded by Ptolemy, Alexander's crafty and seasoned general, shrewdly grafted Greek sensibilities to the ancient religions of the land it occupies. Eventually the Ptolemies followed Alexander's example and pronounced themselves gods, intermarrying to ensure the purity of their bloodline. What was ensured, of course, was decline. Culture and diversity thrived under the Ptolemies, but Egypt was an unruly kingdom, a complex and volatile chemistry of cultures. And the Ptolemies ran to fat. Egypt's decay coincided with the rise of Rome, and it is in the contest between East and West that Cleopatra's story unfolds." "As Foss shows, Cleopatra played her hand in the only manner she could. Determined that her kingdom would survive, she was prepared to do whatever it took to retain power and very nearly achieved dominance of the whole of the eastern Mediterranean world. When finally she surrendered her ambitions, it was with the larger-than-life style that inspired ancient chroniclers, and Shakespeare and Hollywood alike."--Jacket

"From rural Canada to Spain and North Africa, and from jobs as a journeyman writer and reporter, Lew Holle's life follows an apparently random course. Without a plan beyond a determination to remain an outsider, he falls guiltlessly into the life of the drug smuggler, transporting ancient hashish dreams from old lands to modern, dissatisfied Western youth. When a moment's incaution sends Lew out of the drug trade with a slam of prison doors, he finally makes an active choice about what to do next, electing to drop out even further from the main currents of life. In the forests of British Columbia, a cabin in the woods provides perfect insulation from the ugly and almost infectious world he rejects."--Publisher description
