Einstein : a centenary volume by Albert Einstein( Book )

26 editions published between 1979 and 1980 in 3 languages and held by 1,606 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An assessment of Einstein's life and works featuring selections from his writings and his contributions to science and peace
Special relativity by A. P French( Book )

96 editions published between 1966 and 2004 in 9 languages and held by 1,318 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book opens with a description of the smooth transition from Newtonian to Einsteinian behaviour from electrons as their energy is progressively increased, and this leads directly to the relativistic expressions for mass, momentum and energy of a particle

Newtonian mechanics by A. P French( Book )

32 editions published between 1971 and 2011 in 5 languages and held by 1,029 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A rough guide to the possible use of the book is suggested by its division into three parts. Part I, The Approach to Newtonian Dynamics , is intended to serve two purposes. First, it does discuss the basic concepts of kinematics and dynamics, more or less from scratch. Second, it seeks to place the study of mechanics squarely in the context of the world of physical phenomena and of necessarily imperfect physical theories. Part II, Classical Mechanics at Work, is undoubtedly the heart of the book. The initial emphasis is on Newton's second law applied to individual objects. Later, the emphasis shifts to systems of two or more particles, and to the conservation laws for momentum and energy. A fairly lengthy chapter is devoted to the subject that deserves pride of place in the whole Newtonian scheme-the theory of universal gravitation and its successes, which can still be appreciated as a pinnacle in man's attempts to discover order in the vast universe in which he finds himself. Part III, Some Special Topics, concerns itself with the problems of noninertial frames, central-force motions, and rotational dynamics.--

Introduction to classical mechanics by A. P French( Book )

This book is, in essence, an updated and revised version of an earlier textbook, Newtonian Mechanics, written about fifteen years ago by one of us (APF) and published in 1971. The book has been significantly changed in emphasis as well as length. Our aim has been to produce a mechanics text, suitable for use at beginning university level, for students who have a background typified by the British sixth-form level in physics and mathematics. We hope, however, that the book will also be found useful in the teaching of mechanics at the upper levels of the secondary schools themselves. Calculus is freely used from the outset. In making the present revision we have drastically cut down on the amount of historical and more discursive material. Nevertheless, our goal has been to present classical mechanics as physics, not as applied mathematics. Although we begin at the beginning, we have aimed at developing the basic principles and their applications as rapidly as seemed reasonable, so that by the end of the book students will be able to feel that they have achieved a good working knowledge of the subject and can tackle fairly sophisticated problems. To help with this process, each chapter is followed by a good number of exercises, some of them fairly challenging. We shall be very grateful to receive comments and corrections from those who use this book

Low-energy cross section of the D-D reaction and angular distribution of the protons emitted by Egon Bretscher( Book )

3 editions published between 1946 and 1950 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The thick target yield of the reaction D + D yields T + p + 3.98 Mev has been measured, using a heavy ice target, and observations have been made on the angular distribution of the protons. Experiments have been carried out in the region 15 Kev to 105 Kev incident deuteron energy. Evidence has been obtained that, even for very small bombarding energies, the angular distribution of protons in the center-of-gravity (c.g.) system does not become Isotropic. The variation of the cross section with energy can only approximately be represented by a Gamow function
