Gustave Flaubert, Madame Bovary by Stephen Heath( Book )

9 editions published in 1992 in English and French and held by 703 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Madame Bovary was one of the most influential literary achievements of the nineteenth century and gained immediate notoriety through its questioning of marriage, sex, and the role of women. Stephen Heath shows how this landmark text captures and definingly represents a fundamental experience of the post-romantic, commercial-industrial, emotional-democratic period. Drawing on the terms of Flaubert's intense reaction against what was seen as the stifling mediocrity of bourgeois culture, he shows how an imagination of style and artistic impersonality comes to produce in the writing of Emma bovary, the provincial 'heroine', a new problematic version of both woman and art. The language, discourse, society reader( Book )

12 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For twenty-five years, the Language, Discourse, Society series has been at the forefront of multidisciplinary studies, publishing books on topics ranging from biology to aesthetics, sociology to literary criticism, philosophy to art history. The Language, Discourse, Society Reader offers a representative selection of material from those books to give a valuable overview of the work of the series. That work has been concerned both with formal analysis and historical explanation, with both social theory and the study of language, and concerned with showing the necessary interrelations of the separate disciplines for the understanding of the complex reality of different objects of study. The title of the series was, and is, the recognition of this: language, discourse and society are to be grasped together in an interdependence and interaction within which they are neither to be held separate nor run into one another regardless of their specificity. The founding ambition of the series, as the Editors make clear and examine in their introduction to the Reader, was to argue for and develop such an approach. It is that argument and that development which this Reader sets out and exemplifies

Speech or death? : language as social order : a psychoanalytic study by Moustafa Safouan( Book )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Using questions of ambiguity in language and of interpretation in psychoanalysis, this book explores the alliance of religion and the social as they support the sacred. It links language, the law of the name, with the gift as obligation. Through its sympathetic critique of Freud's Totem and Taboo, it regards the religion of the father in the light of psychoanalysis: each person caught up in a productive 'solitary alliance' within the social symbolic order."--Jacket
