Manufacturing for export in the developing world : problems and possibilities by Gerald K Helleiner( )

23 editions published between 1995 and 2003 in English and held by 1,648 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In recent years much has been made of the success of developing countries, particularly in East Asia, that have achieved rapid economic growth by manufacturing goods for export. This volume looks at the experience of a number of countries which have tried to effect a similar transition. It combines case studies of five countries with an introduction that considers the overall context and conclusions. The book uncovers serious potential difficulties in maintaining the pace of manufacturing for export in developing countries, and shows that there is no simple relationship between import liberalization and manufacturing for export

12 editions published between 1986 and 1987 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The world is faced with a crisis in Africa. The word "crisis" is undoubtedly overused in today's complex and unstable world, but the current situation in Africa richely deserves its use. On top of fundamental problems of longer-run development - rapid population growth, slow economic growth, and susceptibility of drought and desertification - that had already attracted wide-spread concern, recent years have seen savage blows from a malfunctioning world economy dealt on Africa. The collapse in African countries' international terms of trade consequent to oil price increases and severe global recession has done the greatest damage, but high international interest rates and protectionism have also hurt

Trade policy, industrialization, and development : new perspectives by Gerald K Helleiner( Book )

18 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For the greater part of the post-war period developing countries have striven to industrialize and diversify their economies as the surest way to accelerating their economic growth. The policies adopted to achieve these ends have, however, aroused intense controversy. This study draws upon new developments in the theory of international trade to shed fresh light upon these old controversies about trade, industrialization, and development."--BOOK JACKET. "The authors pay particular attention to the real-world phenomena that orthodox economics often neglects: oligopoly, scale economies, learning, foreign ownership, and externalities. New case studies of Brazilian civil aircraft, Korean semi-conductors and several developing-country automobile industries are included. The volume contributes to a better appreciation of the actual problems and constraints of industrialization and growth in developing countries, as well as pointing the way to useful further lines of research in this important area."--Jacket

Global development fifty years after Bretton Woods : essays in honour of Gerald K. Helleiner by R. Albert Berry( Book )

15 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 317 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The international economic order created at Bretton Woods in 1944 was not crafted with the developing countries principally in mind. Moreover, the nature of the world community has changed profoundly in the last half-century. The problems and opportunities of developing countries have moved to centre stage in today's global economy. The 16 contributors to this volume examine ways in which the international economic system could be reformed in order better to meet the needs and aspirations of the developing world in the coming decades
From adjustment to development in Africa : conflict, controversy, convergence, consensus? by Giovanni Andrea Cornia( Book )

14 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The economic crisis in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1980s and 1990s has generated fierce debate among analysts and policy-makers concerning its causes and appropriate ways out of it. The 'structural adjustment' programmes promoted by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have been at the centre of the debate. This volume brings together economists from these international financial institutions and some of the best known of their critics to show where the debate now-stands. A distinguished collection of African and international economists offers up-to-date analysis of the key policy issues in structural adjustment in Africa." "Among the policies addressed are those in the spheres of agriculture, trade, exchange rates, privatisation, investment, social sectors, external relations and democratisation. An introductory interpretive essay searches for areas of consensus and identifies those of continuing controversy. In no other place is there such an up-to-date, informed and comprehensive analysis of the debate over African recovery."--Jacket

The international monetary and financial system : developing-country perspectives by Gerald K Helleiner( Book )

13 editions published in 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume is a compendium of papers by developing-country officials and academics addressing international monetary and financial issues from the perspectives of the developing countries. The book contains the papers and the major comments upon them made at a conference sponsored by the Group of Twenty-Four (G-24) on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Bretton Woods conference, which created the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. These papers served as background in the development of G-24 policy positions in current debates about the possible reform of the major international financial institutions. The papers address such issues as the interests of developing countries in effective global macroeconomic management, the management of international private capital flows, the provision of sufficient international liquidity for the needs of the world economy, the financing of development in low-income countries, structural adjustment and adjustment in transitional economies, the roles of the IMF and the World Bank in developing countries, the governance of the IMF and World Bank, the evolution of the regional development banks and their relationship to other multilateral development institutions, and the potential for developing-country cooperation in international financial institutions. Nowhere else can one find so complete and up to date an account of developing-country perspectives on these issues. The book also contains an introduction that summarizes the major policy suggestions made at the conference
