Stories from a Ming collection. Translations of Chinese short stories published in the seventeenth century by Menglong Feng( Book )

113 editions published between 1500 and 2009 in 5 languages and held by 1,345 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The popularity of the Chinese storyteller goes back to the marketplace of the T'ang dynasty, but the familiar figure came into its own in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This selection of stories from Feng Menglong's collection, Stories Old and New (originally published in 1624), includes representative types of the storyteller's traditional art. "The Pearl-Sewn Shirt" is a cautionary romance describing the tragedy of a broken marriage; the heroic biography, which depicts a neglected man of high worth gradually receiving recognition, is represented by "Wine and Dumplings"; an authentic twelfth-century forerunner of the detective story is found in "The Canary Murders." The other tales concern traffic in the supernatural, didactic admonitions to observe morality in sex and loyalty in friendship, and realistic accounts of the meanness and corruption of official life. Also includes "The Lady Who Was a Beggar," "The Journey of the Corpse," "The Story of Wu Pao-an," and "The Fairy's Rescue."

Song Ming ping hua xuan / Selected Chinese stories of the Song and Ming dynasties / written by Feng Menglong and Ling Mengchu ; translated by Yang Xianyi, Gladys Yang by Menglong Feng( Book )

28 editions published between 2000 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Pinghua was originally referred to the performance art of story-telling in which the performer told the story without any singing or musical accompaniment. It became very popular in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Later, the content of those stories were recorded in writing and this is how vernacular fiction came into being. In the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), the term pinghua was used to refer to vernacular records of stories with historical themes. By the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, it came to refer to vernacular stories irrespective of theme. Pinghua mainly targeted at ordinary people living in urban areas. It mostly mirrors the vicissitudes of their life with a simple vernacular language. Differing from the poems and articles of officials and scholars, it speaks for the ordinary people and depicts their psychological aspects. Pinghua has high literary and artistic values. Stories to Enlighten Men, Stories to Warn Men and Stories to Awaken Men, Amazing Tales and Amazing Tales, Second Series (the five are jointly referred to as "Three Story Collections and Two Series of Amazing Tales" are the five most famous collections of vernacular short stories of the Ming Dynasty. Many stories from them have been translated into many languages shortly after the collections were published. The twenty stories in this collection were selected from the above mentioned five collections. They were translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang."--Résumé de l'éditeur

Stories to caution the world by Menglong Feng( Book )

Stories to Caution the World is the first complete translation of Jingshi tongyan, the second of Feng Menglong's three collections of stories which were pivotal in the development of Chinese vernacular fiction. These tales, whose importance in the Chinese literary canon and in world literature is without question, have been compared to Boccaccio's Decameron and the stories of A Thousand and One Nights. Peopled with scholars, emperors, ministers, generals, and a gallery of ordinary men and women in their everyday surroundings - merchants and artisans, prostitutes and courtesans, matchmakers and fortune-tellers, monks and nuns, servants and maids, thieves and impostors - the stories in this collection provide a vivid panorama of the bustling world of imperial China before the end of the Ming dynasty.Feng Menglong collected popular stories from a variety of sources (some dating back centuries) and circulated them via the flourishing seventeenth-century publishing industry. He not only saved them from oblivion but elevated the status of vernacular literature and provided material for authors of the great late-Ming and Qing novels to draw upon. As in their translation of the first collection of Feng's trilogy, Stories Old and New, Shuhui and Yunqin Yang include all forty stories as well as Feng's interlinear and marginal comments and all of the verse woven throughout the stories.Feng Menglong (1574-1646), the most knowledgeable connoisseur of popular literature of his time, is best known for his three collections of vernacular stories, now commonly known as the Sanyan. Shuhui Yang is professor of Chinese at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. Yunqin Yang is a simultaneous interpreter in the United Nations Secretariat
