Global diasporas : an introduction by Robin Cohen( )

67 editions published between 1997 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 3,548 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What is a diaspora? For the Greeks, from whose language the word originated, diaspora meant the dispersal of population through colonization. For Jews, Africans, Armenians, and others, the word acquired a more sinister and brutal meaning. Diaspora meant a collective trauma, a banishment into exile, and a heart-aching longing to return home. During the early modern period, trade and labor diasporas girded the mercantilist and early capitalist worlds. Today the term has changed again, often implying a positive and ongoing relationship between migrants' homelands and their places of work and settlement. In this perceptive and arresting analysis, Robin Cohen illuminates the changing meanings of diaspora and the contemporary diasporic condition. This volume serves to introduce a major new series, Global Diasporas, which will prove essential for students of race, ethnicity, nationalism, and comparative politics. -- Publisher description
Migration and its enemies : global capital, migrant labour, and the nation-state by Robin Cohen( )

25 editions published between 2006 and 2016 in English and held by 1,071 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book, Robin Cohen shows how the preferences, interests and actions of global capital, migrant labour and national politicians intersect and often contradict each other. Does capital require subordinated labour? Is it possible for capital to move to labour rather than labour to capital? Can trade substitute for migration? Cohen explores how nation-states segment the 'insiders' from the 'outsiders' and how politically powerless migrants relate to more privileged migrants and the national citizenry, discussing the functions and effects of social exclusion and deportations. He asks whether politicians can effectively control national borders even if they wish to do so."--Jacket

African islands and enclaves( Book )

11 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 315 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As history has shown, remote islands or small states can be flashpoints for international crises. This collection of commissioned essays examines African countries that, because of their seeming insignificance, have been passed over in recent scholarship. The essays focus on current political and economic issues. Why do such states find it difficult to sustain stable economic and political orders? The role of such countries in international trade; the effects of their small size, remoteness, or paucity of resources; and their use as military bases for other powers are among the subjects discussed.--Publisher description
