Harvey Fergusson(
Book
)
21 editions published between 1954 and 1981 in English and Icelandic and held by 671 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Leo Mendes is a peddler who decides to come to the sleepy New Mexican village of Don Pedro and open a store. Patient, kind, trusting, and fair, he's slowly accepted by the community, especially by Padre Orlando, the local priest, and Don Augustin Vierra, the area's richest land owner. He falls in love with Vierra's impetuous and vibrant daughter, Magdalena, 24 years his junior. Mendes is not Catholic, and against everyone's wishes, they marry outside the Church. Everything is great until the young and ambitious Robert Coppinger shows up and steals the heart of Magdalena. The introspective and retiring Mendes is at a crossroads: should he fight for Magdalena or let her go?

Footloose McGarnigal by
Harvey Fergusson(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1930 in English and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Inspired by his memories of the strange adventures of a pioneering uncle, Alec McGarnigal went West in search of a life more thrilling and romantic than that of a minor employee in a vast New York corporation. Alone as a timber cruiser and, later, as a forest ranger in the wilderness of New Mexico or with the poets, painters, and mystics of exotic Taos, he had many strange experiences--but hardly what he had expected. Always beyond the horizon beckoned a more glamorous life, a more fascinating love. This story of Footloose's wanderings not only gives us a vivid contrast between the new metropolitan civilization of the East and the older life of the West, but is a penetrating study of man's eternal flight toward romance.--Cover

Followers of the sun, a trilogy of the Santa Fé trail: Wolf song, In those days, the blood of the conquerors by
Harvey Fergusson(
Book
)
4 editions published between 1929 and 1942 in English and held by 74 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Although they were not conceived or written as a trilogy the three novels contained in this volume belong together, and I believe they have more interest and significance taken together than any of them has alone. They all deal with the same region and spring from the same impulse. Taken together, they tell the story of a great migration from the time when lone hunters invaded a wilderness until the frontier had been pushed into the ocean and the westward flow of human energy had come nearly to a stop. They also cover almost a hundred years in the history of the racial and cultural border where the Spanish-America of the South meets the northern Anglo-America in a contact that is still a vital thing. -- Introduction
