Universals of human language( Book )

1 edition published in 1978 in English and held by 553 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The 46 papers in this 4-volume collection pro-vide clear and certain evidence that the search for "implicational universals" of human language (that is, for valid empirical generalizations such as "if property Y exists in a language, then property X must exist as well") has established itself, once and for all, as a powerful and dynamic force in modern linguistics. Concomitantly, the collection attests to a broadened use among scholars engaged in universals re-search of a theoretical and methodological strategy-pioneered, elaborated, and most extensively applied by Joseph Greenberg- that contrasts in fundamental respects with procedures favored by generative grammarians. Finally, and most impressive of all, the papers present abundant "results," a profusion of concrete findings that should persuade even the most hardened skeptics that implicational principles have a great deal to tell about what human language is and how it got to be that way. -- from (May 21, 2014)
Language problems of developing nations by Joshua A Fishman( Book )

11 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most of the papers in this collection were presented at a conference on language problems of the developing nations at Airlie House, Warrenton, Virginia in November 1966. This conference was one of the several organized and sponsored by the Committee on Sociolinguistics of the Social Science Research Council in its effort to promote interdisciplinary research and training. The phenomena of the birth and rebirth of nations, peoples, and languages are not only provocative but basic to an understanding of social change, national integration, and language development. The introductory section of this volume presents papers by J.A. Fishman, J. Das Gupta, and C.A. Ferguson. Part ii (Language and National Development) contains papers by J.A. Fishman, H. Kloss, D. Rustow, A. Tabouret-Keller, P. Alexandre, C.F. Gallagher, J. Das Gupta, J.J. Gumperz, B. Jernudd, A.A. Mazrui, J.N. Paden, and P.L.van den Berghe. Selections in Part iii (Language Planning, Standardization, and Policy) are by R.G. Armstrong, H. Blanc, C.A. Ferguson, E. Haugen, J.V. Neustupny, E. Polome, A. Valdman, W.H. Whiteley, S.A. Wurm, and P. Zima. Part iv (Literature and Education) papers are by J. Bowers, D.H. Burns, L. Harries, R.B. Le Page, H. Passin, C.H. Prator, and J. Rubin. Part v (Integrative Summary) is by J.A. Fishman. Author and subject indexes conclude the volume. (Amm)

12 editions published in 1963 in English and French and held by 222 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Kufner and William G. Moulton; (3) Italian, by Frederick B. Agard and Robert J. Di Pietro; (4) Russian: Edward Stankiewicz and Dean S. Worth; and (5) Spanish, by William A. Stewart. Virtually all of the entries are annotated. A wide variety of topics are dealt with, including bibliographies, contrastive studies, dialectology, grammatical studies, historical treatments, lexical studies, orthography, pedagogical materials, phonetics, phonology, semantics, statistical works, stylistics and syntax. Structuralist studies in Arabic linguistics : Charles A. Ferguson's papers, 1954-1994 by Charles A Ferguson( Book )

11 editions published in 1997 in English and Italian and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Containing Charles Ferguson's papers on Arabic linguistics, this volume addresses issues of continuing concern in phonology, syntax, historical linguistics, and sociolinguistics." "The introduction provides a biographical sketch, including excerpts from interviews with Ferguson in which he discusses his career and dealings with Arabic. A critical overview precedes each of the four sections (Diachronica, Phonology, Register and Genre, and General)." "This work fills an important gap in the history of linguistics in documenting much of the career and contributions of a formative figure in American linguistics. In addition to updating Ferguson's articles, the volume preserves Ferguson's reflections on the events, personalities, relationships, and issues at the time he wrote the articles, as well as on subsequent developments. A unique and fascinating picture of a pioneer linguist."--Jacket

Lessons in contemporary Arabic by Charles A Ferguson( Book )

15 editions published between 1960 and 1964 in 4 languages and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This course of lessons in Arabic is intended for use in semi-intensive or intensive courses (6 to 8 hours a week) at the college level for Americans who want to learn the kind of Arabic used today throughout the Arab world for writing and formal speaking. This volume consists of eight lessons, about half of the full textbook as planned. The course presupposes a foundation in the Arabic sound and writing systems; no explanations are given in these areas. Each lesson consists of five main parts: (1) the Basic Sentences, a set of natural Arabic sentences on a certain topic; (2) the Grammar Notes, a set of explanations of features of the grammatical structure of the language which have appeared in the Basic Sentences; (3) the Drills, exercises of various kinds devised to drill the student on the features of grammar and vocabulary learned up to that point; (4) the Supplementary Sentences, containing familiar words and constructions in new combinations; and (5) a Vocabulary of all the new words occurring in that lesson, with their English equivalents. The course is intended to be used with a qualified instructor. (Author/AM)
