American political thought by Kenneth M Dolbeare( Book )

This book has its roots in the project which the author began in an effort to understand the sharply contrasting public policy prescriptions urged in the 1980s for curing the deepening malaise of the American economy. In particular, he wanted to identify the value premises which lay behind them, to trace their probable economic and social consequences and to do this in the context of comparing the current situation with the only similar period in American history: the "Great Transformation" of 1877-1920. His thought was to see more clearly what might be at stake in pending policy choices by looking at them against a backdrop of the momentous conflicts and changes of that period which so decisively shaped contemporary American social order

Lays out the nature of the large-scale changes in American economic performance over recent years and their policy implications for the haves, the have-somes and the have-nots. The author asks whether we may not be on the brink of a truly class-aligned electoral politics. His argument gives special weight to the enormous "party of nonvoters" in American politics. It also stresses the fundamental, inescapable importance of the electoral process to any possible democratizing change in the United States
