The equatorie of the planetis by Geoffrey Chaucer( Book )

30 editions published between 1952 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 441 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, first published by Cambridge University Press in 1955, investigates the origins of The Equatorie of the Planetis, a fourteenth-century manuscript in the library of Peterhouse, Cambridge. Dr Price, a historian of science, examines the idea that it was composed and written by Geoffrey Chaucer. The chapters discuss the problems of ascription, bibliography and palaeography as well as giving an account of the theories and history of medieval astronomy and the Equatorie instrument. This edition reproduces, translates and describes the complete manuscript and uses various photographic techniques to examine erased words and analyse Chaucer's signature on the document. There are facsimiles of pages from the astronomical tables together with an analysis of their contents, and a selection of extracts from other unpublished Middle English astronomical texts are included in the appendices. A glossary is provided by R.M. Wilson
Heavenly clockwork; the great astronomical clocks of medieval China by Joseph Needham( Book )

27 editions published between 1960 and 2008 in English and held by 303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A reissue with a new foreword and supplement, of a modern classic published in 1960. The invention of the mechanical clock was one of the most important turning points in the history of science and technology. This study revealed six centuries of mechanical clockwork preceding the first mechanical escapement clocks of the West of about AD 1300. Detailed and fully illustrated accounts of elaborate Chinese clocks are accompanied by a discussion of the social context of the Chinese inventions and an assessment of their possible transmission to medieval Europe. For this revised edition, Dr Joseph Needham has contributed a new foreword on recent research and perceptions. In a supplement John H. Combridge details a modern reconstruction of Su Sung's timekeeping device, which together with textual studies modifies our understanding of this important early technology."--Publisher's information
