In the medieval and early modern periods, mentions pogroms, discriminatory legislation, and other persecutions, and their reflection in art (e.g. sculptures of the Church and the Synagogue). Relates the Jewish struggle for emancipation from the end of the 18th century, and the "Hep!-Hep!" riots of 1819. Pp. 150-151 contain illustrations from early 19th-century antisemitic pamphlets. Pp. 208-209 contain caricatures from Bavaria during the 1850s. Deals with the rise of modern political antisemitism and shows antisemitic caricatures from the satirical journal "Simplicissimus" (pp. 256-257). also mentions Wagner's antisemitism. Pp. 326-327 relate to Nazi activities in the early 1920s and give a short survey of the events of 1933
