East Central and Southeastern Europe, considered as "Eastern Eruope," are the subject of a three-year survey of language and area studies undertaken by several committees of specialists of the American Council of Learned Societies. Four basic goals of the project include: (1) a survey of graduate training and research needs, (2) an evaluation of the role of East European studies in undergraduate instruction, (3) a survey of the "state of the art" in 15 disciplines, and (4) a two-volume bibliography and reference guide of 6,000 annotated titles.
