The Cambridge history of Islam by University of Cambridge( Book )

151 editions published between 1970 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 2,315 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work aims to present to the reader a narrative of the several threads of Islamic history over a period of more than 13 centuries, in an area extending from Spain and Morocco to South East Asia. In view of this enormous perspective and the fact that only two volumes must fulfil the task, the editors are naturally explicit about the book's limitations: it is intended primarily for general readers of history, for students of history, and particularly for students of Oriental disciplines (I, p. ix). While not claiming to present any exhaustive definitive account, the editors have shown a keen awareness of the shortcomings and gaps in much of the secondary material previously recommended to students and general readers, and have tried 'to offer an authoritative guide to the state of knowledge at the present day, and to provide a sound foundation on which to build' (I, p. xviii). -- From http://www.jstor.org (Nov. 25, 2016)

Overview: A History of the Sudan by Martin Daly and PM Holt, sixth edition, has been fully revised and updated and covers the most recent developments that have occurred in Sudan over the last nine years, including the crisis in Darfur. The most notable developments that this text covers includes the decades-long civil war in the South (with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in January 2005); the emergence of the Sudan as an oil-producer and exporter, and its resulting higher profile in global economic affairs, notably as a partner of China; the emergence of al-Qaeda, the relations of Sudanese authorities with Osama bin Laden (whose headquarters were in the Sudan in the 1990s), and the Sudanese government's complicated relations with the West

42 editions published between 1986 and 2014 in English and Polish and held by 802 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The kaleidoscopic political changes during the years covered by this volume include the rise and fall of the Crusader states, the expansion of the Mongol empire, the rise of the Mamluk sultanate and of its ultimate conquerors, the Ottomans. To all of these Professor Holt is a clear and skilful guide. He principally utilises, and to some extent reinterprets, the medieval Arabic sources, to present a picture which differs in important respects from the conventional western-orientated view

9 editions published between 1970 and 2014 in English and held by 239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From Byzantium to the Mongols to the Sultans of Rum, this acclaimed book offers an important insight into the evocative history of Turkey before the coming of Ottoman power. Turkey forms a historical bridge between Europe and Asia and as such has played a pivotal role throughout history. The rise of Constantinople and the later Ottoman Empire are well known: less well understood are developments in the three centuries in-between. What led to the decline of the Byzantine Empire and what happened in the intervening years before the rise of the Ottomans? Translated from the original Fr

10 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This work is an annotated translation of the Funj Chronicle, the only full-length Arabic account of the Nilotic Sudan from 910/1504-5 to 1288/1871, produced by a succession of nineteenth-century Sudanese writers. The earlier part is based on a king-list of the Funj dynasty of Sinnar. From the mid-twelfth/eighteenth century an increasingly detailed narrative describes the rule of the Hamaj regents, the conquest by Muhammad 'Ali Pasha's forces and the first half-century of Turco-Egyptian government. The translator's Introduction discusses the textual history, structure and authorship of the Chronicle, while four Appendixes provide supplementary materials
