Da erbot sieh freundlicherweise der Herausgeber dieser Sammlung, Pro fessor Westphal, den Text der Vortrage nach dem aufgenoIll menen Stenogramm und auf Grund der Vorarbeiten von Frau Dr. Jorges auszuarbeiten und seine groBe Erfahrung in der all gemeinverstandlichen Darstellung physikalischer Gedanken gange in den Dienst dieses Buches zu stellen. Das so entstandene Blichlein ist, ebenso wie die acht Vor trage, fUr naturwissenschaftlich interessierte Leser bestimmt, die keine theoretisch-physikalische Fachausbildung hinter sieh haben, die aber do(:, h ein gewisses Verstandnis fUr physikalische Begriffsbildungen mitbringen. Auf den Wunsch des Verbandes Deutscher Elektrotechniker ist eine kurze Geschiehte der Atom physik'und eine allgemeine Ubersicht liber die heutigen Kennt nisse vom Atombau der eigentlichen Kernphysik vorangestellt worden. Ein wirkliches Verstandnis der Atomphysik ist aus einer derartigen Ubersieht natlirlich nieht zu gewinnen, aber vielleieht genligt der Uberblick doch als Grundlage fUr ein Ver standnis der folgenden Vortrage liber Kernphysik. Bei der Dar stellung der Kernphysik bin ieh von anderen allgemeinverstand lichen Darstellungen dieses Gebietes insofern abgewiehen, als ich mieh bemliht habe, die Theorie der Vorgange im Atomkern in den Vordergrund zu stell en und die praktischen Anwendungen erst am SchluB zu besprechen

Digging deep into the archival record among formerly secret technical reports, Rose examines early thinking about the atomic bomb not only on the German side but also among Allied scientists. He finds that the early history of fission bomb physics had no shortage of false starts and fumbles in both camps. But, whereas the Allied physicists' ideas crystallized into a realistic prospect for a bomb toward the end of 1940. Heisenberg's basic misconceptions persisted, influencing the German leaders not to push for atomic weapons. In fact, Heisenberg never had to face the moral problem of whether he should design an actual bomb for the Nazi regime. Rose's exploration of the German mentality that made it quite reasonable for "unpolitical" scientists to support the regime in power, whatever its form, shows the extent to which Heisenberg and others could devote themselves to research they regarded as patriotic

Quantum mechanics has raised in an acute form three problems which go to the heart of man's relationship with nature through experimental science: (r) the public objectivity of science, that is, its value as a universal science for all investigators; (2) the empirical objectivity of scientific objects, that is, man's ability to construct a precise or causal spatio-temporal model of microscopic systems; and finally (3), the formal objectivity of science, that is, its value as an expression of what nature is independently of its being an object of human knowledge. These are three aspects of what is generally called the "crisis of objec tivity" or the "crisis of realism" in modern physics. This crisis is. studied in the light of Werner Heisenberg's work. Heisenberg was one of the architects of quantum mechanics, and we have chosen his writings as the principal source-material for this study. Among physicists of the microscopic domain, no one except perhaps Bohr has expressed himself so abundantly and so profoundly on the philosophy of science as Heisenberg. His writings, both technical and non-technical, show an awareness of the mysterious element in scientific knowledge, far from the facile positivism of Bohr and others of his contemporaries. The mystery of human knowledge and human SUbjectivity is for him an abiding source of wonder
