Mathematical optimization and economic theory by Michael D Intriligator ( Book )
31 editions published between 1971 and 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 997 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mathematical Optimization and Economic Theory provides a self-contained introduction to and survey of mathematical programming and control techniques and their applications to static and dynamic problems in economics, respectively. It is distinctive in showing the unity of the various approaches to solving problems of constrained optimization that all stem back directly or indirectly to the method of Lagrange multipliers. In the 30 years since its initial publication, there have been many more applications of these mathematical techniques in economics, as well as some advances in the mathematics of programming and control. Nevertheless, the basic techniques remain the same today as when the book was originally published. Thus, it continues to be useful not only to its original audience of advanced undergraduate and graduate students in economics, but also to mathematicians and other researchers interested in learning about the applications of the mathematics of optimization to economics. The book covers in some depth both static programming problems and dynamic control problems of optimization and the techniques of their solution. It also clearly presents many applications of these techniques to economics, and it shows why optimization is important for economics. Audience: mathematicians and other researchers who are interested in learning about the applications of mathematical optimization in economics, as well as students at the advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate level. A basic knowledge of analysis and matrix algebra is recommended. Two appendices summarize the necessary mathematics

Handbook of mathematical economics by Kenneth Joseph Arrow ( Book )
60 editions published between 1981 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 937 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Handbook of Mathematical Economics aims to provide a definitive source, reference, and teaching supplement for the field of mathematical economics. It surveys, as of the late 1970's the state of the art of mathematical economics. This is a constantly developing field and all authors were invited to review and to appraise the current status and recent developments in their presentations. In addition to its use as a reference, it is intended that this Handbook will assist researchers and students working in one branch of mathematical economics to become acquainted with other branches of this field. Volume 1 deals with Mathematical Methods in Economics, including reviews of the concepts and techniques that have been most useful for the mathematical development of economic theory. For more information on the Handbooks in Economics series, please see our home page on <SURL>http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/hes</SURL>

Part I deals with the problems and prospects of such a dialogue and its consequences for world peace. Part II focuses on the old dilemmas and new challenges in Eurasian security. Part III concentrates on globalization and regionalization as the two dominant Eurasian trends. The volume compares and contrasts regionalist trends in Europe, Asia, and North America. The competition and cooperation among different global forces led by the United States, Europe, and Asia for resources and identities are the main foci
Handbook of econometrics by James J Heckman ( Book )
26 editions published between 1983 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 857 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
As conceived by the founders of the Econometric Society, econometrics is a field that uses economic theory and statistical methods to address empirical problems in economics. It is a tool for empirical discovery and policy analysis. The chapters in this volume embody this vision and either implement it directly or provide the tools for doing so. This vision is not shared by those who view econometrics as a branch of statistics rather than as a distinct field of knowledge that designs methods of inference from data based on models of human choice behavior and social interactions
Countering terrorism and WMD creating a global counter-terrorism network by Peter Katona ( )
9 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 578 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
(Publisher-supplied data) The purpose of this book is to explain the need for a global network approach to counter-terrorism, and to elaborate how it could be formed. As the authors see it, the world is changing today far more rapidly than ever before, and current public and private institutions cannot keep up with this new paradigm. While terrorism has a long history, it has become the focus of worldwide attention as a result of the September 11, 2001 strikes on the U.S. and later strikes by al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations on a worldwide basis ranging from Indonesia to Tunisia to Spain. Subsequently, there have been various attempts to counter this latest wave of terrorism, including the U.S. strikes against Afghanistan and Iraq, President George W. Bush's declaration of a "War against Terrorism," the creation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the 9/11 Commission and the very recent arrests of Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani and Issa al-Hindi. Despite these events and reactions, we believe that there is a need to consolidate and expand efforts against terrorism through the creation of an formal and an informal global counterterrorism network. This book contains essays from experts in various disciplines, including clinical medicine and public health; economics, political science, and public policy; and law enforcement, which are our own fields; with those of the military, politics, intelligence and the media to try to give some coherence and direction to this process of forming a global counter-terrorism network. The book identifies the nature of a global counterterrorism network, shows how such a global network could be created, and provides some guidelines for gauging its future effectiveness. This book will be essential reading for all serious students of terrorism and political violence, security studies and for defense and policy analysts

Cooperative models in international relations research by Michael D Intriligator ( Book )
9 editions published in 1994 in English and Undetermined and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume further explores the possibilities that rational choice and game theory have to offer for international relations research, using a variety of approaches. For instance, while paying due attention to the importance of bilateral representations of international situations in the form of two person games, it also covers cooperative problems in international relations at a multilateral level. In order to achieve this, it contains several pieces of work that are inspired by notions of coalition analysis and cooperative game theory. In order to cover the various aspects of the formal treatment of international cooperation, the volume is divided into five parts: General Aspects, Specific Applications of Game Theory and Cooperation, Deterrence, Escalation and Crises, and finally Other Approaches to Modeling International Cooperation
