Our green and living world : the wisdom to save it by Edward S Ayensu( Book )

13 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 895 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors survey the ways in which we are losing our ability to survive biologically and present new approaches to regaining it. They examine our planet's green life-layer from every point of view: cultural and artistic, religious, ecological, economic, and scientific. These world respected botanists highlight the true worth of the Plant Kingdom for our lives - from Amazonian rain forests to African violets or tropical foliage plants at the windowsill. India and other lands help provide us with a remarkable arsenal of plant-derived medicines that cure leukemia and other malignancies, that control hypertension, and that also prevent the body from rejecting transplanted organs. Mexico, for instance, produces the wild yams that provide chemical raw materials for the contraceptive pill. And in Kenya, we meet a young wife who brings her to a respected dispenser of traditional medicines extracted from jungle greenery

A comprehensive discussion on the mechanical properties, establishing the methodologies for evaluating the potential utilization of these woods, has been included. Shrinkage and swelling in wood have always presented problems in the utilization of woods. A discussion relating to the differences among (a) moisture content change and shrinkage, (b) the effect of drying conditions on shrinkage and (c) the variation in shrinkage in different species is presented. To aid both beginning students and to refresh the minds of practicing wood technologists, a glossary of the principal terms used in describing the minute features of timbers has also been added

Anatomy of the monocotyledons by C. R Metcalfe( Book )

21 editions published between 1972 and 2004 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When the author and Dr. L. Chalk of the Imperial Forestry Institute at Oxford had completed their two volumes entitled Anatomy of the Dicotyledons, Sir Edward J. Salisbury, who was then Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, suggested that a companion work on the anatomy of monocotyledons was sorely needed. In writing their two volumes on Dicotyledons, the authors were able to take the English translation of Solreder's Sistematic Anatomy of the Dicotyledons as a starting-point, and this considerably simplifield their task. With the Monocotyledons the work was made difficult because there is no counterpart to Soleredr's great treatise on the Dicotyledons
