Security threatened : surveying Israeli opinion on peace and war by Alan Arian( Book )

13 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 283 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Public opinion has played a crucial role in the transitions from war to peace in Israel since the 1967 Six Day war. Security Threatened is the first major analysis of the interactions among opinion, politics and policy in that period, based on opinion surveys of thousands of adult Jews conducted between 1962 and 1994. The public divided during those years into militant hardliners and more conciliatory security positions, and power either shifted between, or was shared by, the Likud and Labour parties. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, with the onset of the intifada, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the American victory in the Gulf War, all segments of the Israeli public became more conciliatory. Policy initiatives reflected shifts in political power which in turn magnified changes in public opinion. Leaders were constrained by public opinion and by perceptions of threat, but they could also alter policy if they had the will because opinion was rather equally divided; since most people had their minds made up, the opposition could not block their policy

The elections in Israel 2009( Book )

8 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 120 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The elections to the 18th Knesset (legislature of Israel) were held on February 10, 2009, almost three years after the elections to the 17th Knesset and approximately twenty months before the original date set for them to be held. The elections are best understood in the context of the wars that were at each end of Ehud Olmertʹs government tenure, corruption scandals involving the prime minister, and the failure of Tipi Livni, the newly elected head of the ruling center party, Kadima to form a new coalition following Olmertʹs resignation. The election campaign of 2009 began with the resignation of Ehud Olmert in the shadow of his corruption scandals and issues of integrity and clean government. This was followed by the world financial crisis, which directed attention towards the economic dimension and performance of the candidates. On the face of it, the campaign was cut short when military action began in Gaa. Still, the election was on the minds of candidates, and the question of who can best ensure security prevailed in the campaign. It became personalied and focused on the candidates: the two candidates who had once headed the government and aspired to return, Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, and the chairperson of Kadima, Tipi Livni, who was running for the first time as head of a party. -- Jacket
