Warrant for genocide; the myth of the Jewish world-conspiracy and the Protocols of the elders of Zion by Norman Cohn( Book )

71 editions published between 1966 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 1,701 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this fascinating work of literary and historical detection, Norman Cohn unravels the origins of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" the hugely successful forgery containing the master-plan of an alleged Jewish conspiracy to control the world. Tracing its roots in anti-Semitic mythology, Cohn pinpoints the collaboration of hack writers and secret policemen in concocting a book that sparked bloody pogroms, was one of the cornerstones of Nazi propaganda and, once the Second World War started, became the principal 'justification' for the attempted extermination of European Jewry. Despite being completely discredited, the Protocols are still widely read, still shaping the thinking of right-wing movements the world over
The pursuit of the millennium : revolutionary millenarians and mystical anarchists of the Middle Ages by Norman Cohn( Book )

101 editions published between 1961 and 2011 in English and Greek, Modern and held by 1,582 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The end of the millennium has always held the world in fear of earthquakes, plague, and the catastrophic destruction of the world. At the dawn of the 21st millennium the world is still experiencing these anxieties, as seen by the onslaught of fantasies of renewal, doomsday predictions, and New Age prophecies. This fascinating book explores the millenarianism that flourished in western Europe between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. Covering the full range of revolutionary and anarchic sects and movements in medieval Europe, Cohn demonstrates how prophecies of a final struggle between the

Cosmos, chaos, and the world to come : the ancient roots of apocalyptic faith by Norman Cohn( Book )

45 editions published between 1993 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 1,489 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book, the author of the classic work The Pursuit of the Millennium investigates the origins of apocalyptic faith - the belief in a perfect future, when the forces of good are victorious over the forces of evil. Norman Cohn takes us back two thousand years to the world views of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India, the innovations of Iranian and Jewish prophets and sages, and the earliest Christian imaginings of heaven on earth, and he illuminates a major turning point in the history of human consciousness. For this second edition, the final chapter on Zoroastrians, Jews, and Christians has been wholly rewritten and extended."--Jacket
Noah's flood : the Genesis story in Western thought by Norman Cohn( Book )

16 editions published between 1996 and 1999 in English and held by 1,178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The biblical tale of Noah and the Flood has been interpreted in many different ways through the ages, mirroring the many changes in Western beliefs and values. In this masterly and beautifully illustrated book, Norman Cohn, the author of The Pursuit of the Millennium and Cosmos, Chaos and the World to Come, explores the origins, development, and varying interpretations of this ancient story and assesses its impact on the history of ideas. The roots of the Flood story, Cohn explains, lie in Mesopotamian mythology. But its meaning was totally transformed by the authors of Genesis so that it became a message of hope for Jews and later a prefiguring of salvation for Christians. Cohn then shows how, under the impact of the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century, the story came to be understood in a new way. Between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries it was closely associated with the development of scientific geology, which it both helped and hindered
Europe's inner demons : an enquiry inspired by the great witch-hunt by Norman Cohn( Book )

29 editions published between 1975 and 1977 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,150 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Europe's Inner Demons: An Enquiry Inspired by the Great Witch-Hunt is a historical study of the beliefs regarding European witchcraft in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe, with particular reference to the development of the witches' sabbat and its influence on the witch trials in the Early Modern period. Within the book, Cohn argues that there never were any Devil-worshiping witches in Early Modern Europe, and that all of those persecuted for being so were innocent. In this he specifically rejects the Witch-cult hypothesis put forward by English scholar Margaret Murray, which argued that there really had been a witch-cult religion which had been pre-Christian in origin. Cohn notes that accusations of worshiping a beast-headed deity, eating children and committing incest were not new to the witches of Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe, but had originally been leveled at Jews in the first century and then at Christians in the second, before being reused against Christian heretical sects like the Waldensians and the Knights Templar during the Late Medieval
Europe's inner demons : the demonization of Christians in medieval Christendom by Norman Cohn( Book )

21 editions published between 1972 and 2011 in English and held by 382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Europe's Inner Demons is a fascinating history of the need to imagine antihuman conspiracies and an investigation of how those fantasies make the great European witch-hunt possible. In addition, Norman Cohn's discovery that some influential sources on witch trials were forgeries has revolutionized the field of witchcraft studies, making this one of the most essential books ever written on the subject."--Jacket
