Gustav Klimt by Gustav Klimt( Book )

33 editions published between 1975 and 2003 in 4 languages and held by 1,255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The alluring imagery of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) has fascinated art lovers for decades. His decorative colors and vibrant, sinuous line seduce the eye and mind. His landscapes are studded with opulent symbols of regeneration. In an age of lingering Victorian repression, his imposing women delivered a message of sexual urgency. Klimt's role in the development of 20th century art is just being realized. Dr. Comini treats his work in a new manner; she discusses the "reverse" parallel between Freud's insight into the content of dream symbols and Klimt's obscuring of manifest content through symbolic details. Her text brings a startling new dimension to the compelling art of a very private man. -- from back cover
Käthe Kollwitz by Elizabeth Prelinger( Book )

24 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 1,250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Few artists are as universally beloved as the German printmaker, draftsman, and sculptor Kathe Kollwitz, whose powerful images of mothers and children and of protest against social injustice have long been admired by both critics and the public. Kollwitz, a woman in a field dominated by men, steadfastly adhered to a figurative style in the era of abstraction and depicted socially engaged subject matter when it was unfashionable. Kollwitz is largely known through political posters and restrikes of her prints. Her reputation has to some extent been dominated by an emphasis on the social content of her work, often at the expense of her remarkable artistic skills. The present study challenges that view by focusing on the artistic aspect of her achievement. The book consists of three essays on Kollwitz. Elizabeth Prelinger provides a reassessment of Kollwitz as an artist; Alessandra Comini presents a richly atmospheric discussion of the artist's life in Berlin during the tumultuous period that spanned two world wars; and Hildegard Bachert surveys the reception of Kollwitz in Germany and the United States as manifested in collections of her works. The volume, which includes a selection of the finest examples of Kollwitz' oeuvre, juxtaposes preparatory drawings with finished art, illustrating the arduous experimental processes by which she attained her brilliant results. Themes important to Kollwitz--such as self-portraits, social activism as illustrated in the cycles A Weavers' Rebellion and Peasants' War, love and death, nudes, workers, war and revolution--are explored in depth in all media. The book will serve as the catalogue for an exhibition of Kollwitz' prints, drawings, and works of sculpture at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, from May 3 to August 26, 1992

Egon Schiele : the Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky collections by Egon Schiele( Book )

13 editions published in 2005 in English and German and held by 382 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A superb draftsman and colorist, he produced images of startling emotional power. Following the lead of his mentor Gustav Klimt, Schiele created figurative works of uncanny intimacy and brought a new openness to the art of his time. Schiele's death at the age of 28 has added a mythic quality to his artistic achievements." "This publication accompanies the exhibition Egon Schiele: The Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky Collections, which presents paintings and drawings from the collections of the co-founders of Neue Galerie New York. Together, these collections comprise the finest gathering of works by Schiele in the United States." "Essays examine the artist's reception history in American and Austria, the censorship of his art during and after his lifetime, and the lost Schiele collections. This publication also traces, for the first time, Schiele's enormous influence on contemporary culture."--Jacket
Egon Schiele : portraits( Book )

6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 232 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book accompanies a major exhibition devoted to portraits created by Austrian artist Egon Schiele, whose figurative work exhibits intense emotion and technical brilliance. Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A superb draftsman and colorist, he produced images of startling emotional power. Following the lead of his mentor, Gustav Klimt, Schiele created figurative works of uncanny intimacy and brought a new openness to the art of his time. Schiele's premature death at the age of 28 has added a mythic quality to his artistic achievements. Egon Schiele: Portraits focuses on five groupings of the artist's work: family and academy, fellow artists, sitters and patrons, lovers, and allegory. In addition, it features a special section on a traumatic and pivotal period in Schiele's life: his arrest and imprisonment during the summer of 1912. Documenting the artist's changing style, both pre- and post-imprisonment, the book features many key works that have been assembled for this exhibition from both American and European museums and private collections
