The educational imagination : on the design and evaluation of school programs by Elliot W Eisner( Book )

31 editions published between 1970 and 2002 in English and held by 2,061 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, Eisner provides a conceptual framework that shows the different ways in which the aims of education can be regarded and describes their implications for curriculum planning and teaching practices. This book provides a "context" in whic h teachers can critically examine prevailing assumptions and both current and proposed practices. An analysis and overview of leading ideas in the field explores American education as it has developed from the turn of the century to the present. Introduction of unique concepts in educational planning include such ideas as eductional connoisseurship--the art of appreciating what is educationally significant, and educational criticism--the use of art critism as a means of describing, interpret ing, and evaluating teaching
The arts and the creation of mind by Elliot W Eisner( Book )

30 editions published between 2002 and 2014 in English and Spanish and held by 1,062 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although the arts are often thought to be closer to the rim of education than to its core, they are critically important means for developing complex and subtle aspects of the mind, argues Elliot Eisner. In this book he describes how various forms of thinking are evoked, developed, and refined through the arts. These forms of thinking are more helpful in dealing with the ambiguities and uncertainties of daily life than are the formally structured curricula that are employed today in schools. Offering a rich array of examples, Eisner describes different approaches to the teaching of the arts and the virtues each possesses when well taught. He discusses especially nettlesome issues pertaining to the evaluation of performance in the arts. Eisner provides a fresh and admittedly iconoclastic perspective on what the arts can contribute to education, namely a new vision of both its aims and its means. This new perspective, Eisner argues, is especially important today, a time at which mechanistic forms of technical rationality often dominate our thinking about the conduct and assessment of education

27 editions published between 1991 and 2017 in English and Spanish and held by 959 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is an important new resource in qualitative research methods and educational research. This benchmark work gives readers a solid understanding of qualitative research and evaluation, and its great promise for evaluating and guiding educational practice. It demonstrates how the same methods used by critics in the arts and humanities, such as observing performance qualities, setting, and interaction patterns, also applies to the classroom practice. Excellent examples are provided to show what this type of research looks like, and how it can be applied to the evaluation of teaching, learning, and the overall school environment

Qualitative inquiry in education : the continuing debate( Book )

13 editions published between 1990 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 786 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book scholars address critical issues in qualitative inquiry. For each issue two papers are presented, followed by a commentary and usually a response from one of the paper presenters. Thus, this volume provides a picture of the current debate as it unfolds among some of the nation's leading educational scholars. An introduction by editors Eisner and Peshkin traces the development of the contemporary interest in qualitative inquiry from the period when such work was considered problematic. Now the commitment to qualitative research by a host of distinguished scholars testifies to its "rooting in American academic life". As the editors emphasize, this book's exploration of issues in qualitative inquiry is intended not to offer "the last word" but "to extend the dialogue on matters of consequence to those who are committed not only to qualitative research but also to research of quality."
