Ansel Adams in color by Ansel Adams( Book )

This landmark book presents fifty majestic images by America's greatest landscape photographer - the first time that an important body of Ansel Adams' color work has ever been published. Ansel Adams began to photograph in color soon after Kodachrome was invented in the mid-1930s, and shot more than 3,000 color images during the course of his lifetime. Very few of these photographs, however, were published or exhibited. As Adams remarked late in his life after observing

Callahan has consistently explored new ways of looking at the world around him - from high-contrast photographs of trees silhouetted against snow, to double exposures of his wife's nude figure merging into landscapes, to minimal abstractions - but he has used these experiments to reveal his relationships to the world around him

Visions and images, American photographers on photography by Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel( Book )

10 editions published between 1981 and 1982 in English and held by 569 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is a valuable record of conversations with fifteen celebrated and distinguished photographers representing the spectrum of "schools", movements, and styles currently in the medium. The interviews establish a vivid and intimate portrait of each subject, focusing on the history of the artist's career, the relationship between his vocational photography, and his personal imagery, the genesis of particular works, and specific technical processes, and are invaluable to an understanding of American photography today."--Page 4 de la couverture

The model wife by Arthur Ollman( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 269 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With provocative photographs by some of the best-known photographers of the past century, The Model Wife is a striking and original book about the place where marriage and photography converge. Friends, lovers, confidantes, collaborators -- the multifaceted relationship between husband and wife takes on another dimension when the couple are also artist and muse. In The Model Wife, Arthur Ollman explores the imagery and photographic history of nine twentieth-century photographers who portrayed their wives over a period of years. He delves into issues of marriage itself and the powerful influences that such a partnership can have on artistic production. Comparisons between the couples and the resulting photographs enrich this discussion."--

Callahan, Siskind, Sommer : at the crossroads of American photography( Book )

4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At the Crossroads of American Photography examines the aesthetic and personal interrelationships of three photographers who helped define the course of American photography after Steiglitz: Frederick Sommer (1905-1999), Harry Callahan (1912-1999) and Aaron Siskind (1903-1991). Although each member of this "holy trinity" (as they were dubbed by photographer and publisher Jonathan Williams) has been honored with individual museum retrospectives, this is the first full comparison of their work, as well as an exploration of their robust, prescient exchange of ideas about photography, abstraction and metaphor over the course of their 25 years as colleagues and friends. Self-taught as photographers, this trio helped shape a national community of peers and the evolution of photography as an art form, creating a bridge between the purity of Group f/64-era photography at midcentury and the hybrid approaches to the medium seen today." "This exquisitely produced exhibition catalogue highlights the powerful role of such camaraderie in shaping photography at this seminal time, before the emergence of a market for photography and before widespread artistic acceptance of the medium. It brings to light contrasting philosophies of the artist/photographer's role (influenced by Existentialism for Siskind and by the writings of Spinoza for Sommer), the interest in chance as an artistic process, the expressive potential of photographic found objects and collage, experimental abstraction, close affiliations with fine art movements (New Bauhaus, Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism), and changing attitudes toward the fine-print tradition."--Jacket

Edward Weston, Harry Callahan by Edward Weston( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and Spanish and held by 50 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book compares the portrait photographs of two American masters, Harry Callahan (1912-1999) and Edward Weston (1886-1958), examining how their images combine desire and affection. While many of their well-known works have been understood as straightforward nudes or landscapes, this book looks beyond the limitations of these categories to suggest a more complex notion of their erotic photography. This book looks at Callahan and Weston's images through an examination of the relationship of the body and nature, but also, that of photography and affection. Unlike the majority of erotic photography that seeks to represent desire, in both Callahan and Weston we find the rare instance of desire wholly transformed into an image - an image where the subject is clearly not just displayed but the affection of the photographers toward the subject is clearly evident. For this to occur, there must be complicity between the photographer and his model.0Exhibition: La Fabrica, Madrid, Spain (9.2013- )

Harry Callahan by Harry M Callahan( Book )

12 editions published between 1997 and 1999 in 4 languages and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Harry Callahan, known for his bold exploration of quotidian details and his innovative use of the abstract in photography, has created a career that spans many eras and lives. From his extended portrait of his wife, Eleanor, to his formal studies of architectural structures and his observation of abstract expressionist line in natural forms, Callahan's remarkable work has been central to the development of American photography. The influence of his labors is easily recognized in the work of many disparate genres of visual art. His photographic legacy continues on not only in the vibrancy of his own images, but in the unparalleled inspiration his teaching has brought to many. Aperture's Masters of Photography series presents Callahan's most vital and lasting images, in addition to a number of photographs that have never been published before. The accompanying essay by Jonathan Williams, poet, essayist, and the publisher of Jargon Society books, provides a unique textual complement to the subtlety of Callahan's work and vision
