Il piccolo villaggio della valle si trasforma in un microcosmo in cui Piccolo Albero impara a riconoscere le persone buone da quelle disoneste, e ad apprezzare la sincerità dei gesti in contrasto con la falsità delle parole. L'idillio viene spezzato dagli assistenti sociali che impongono al bambino di lasciare i nonni e frequentare un collegio a mericano. Nella nuova scuola gli insegnanti fanno di tutto per estirpare ogni accenno di cultura indiana da Piccolo Albero, partendo proprio dall'assegnargli un nuovo nome americano: Joshua. Le timide reazioni del bambino vengono stroncate in maniera violenta, fino alla reclusione in una sorta di cella di isolamento. Qualche girono più tardi il nonno giunge al collegio e, di nascosto, riporta Piccolo Albero sulle montagne. La morte di poco successiva prima del nonno e poi della nonna affidano l'educazione di Piccolo Albero a Salice John: i due si allontanano felici verso le montagne
