Ethics : approaching moral decisions by Arthur F Holmes( Book )

22 editions published between 1949 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 671 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arthur F. Holmes examines some of the major approaches to ethics, including cultural relativism, emotivism, ehtical egoism and utilitarianism. He then outlines a Christian ethic and applies it to four moral issues: human rights, criminal punishment, the legislation of morality, and sexual behavior. Over the years the philosophical landscape has changed somewhat, and in this new edition Arthur Holmes adjusts the argument and information throughout, completely rewriting the earlier chapter on virtue ethics and adding a new chapter on the moral agent. - Publisher
The idea of a Christian college by Arthur F Holmes( Book )

13 editions published between 1975 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 670 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

More than ten years after its publication in 1975, The Idea of a Christian College has become, in the prophetic words of Nicholas Wolterstorff, "a classic, a standard." Widely used by students, lay readers, teachers, and administrators, it provides a concise case for the Christian college and defines its distinctive mission and contribution. This revised edition is Holmes' response to the many professors and students who have read the work enthusiastically and urged the author to clarify certain ideas and to address further aspects of the overall subject. The author has extensively revised several chapters, has eliminated one-gender language, and has included two new chapters: "Liberal Arts as Career Preparation" and "The Marks of an Educated Person."--Back cover
Fact, value, and God by Arthur F Holmes( Book )

6 editions published between 1997 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 505 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book began as an attempt to explore historical ways of grounding moral values objectively in the nature of reality. Unconvinced that we live in a value-free universe, that face and value are ultimately interrelated, or that we have to create all our own values rather that discovering the good, I wanted to explore the fact-value connection in the larger context of metaphysical and theological views. What emerged is a more pervasive linkage than I had anticipated between religious and moral beliefs. Rorty is in measure right. But the claim that values are somehow objective, "out there," is a legacy on which we still need to draw

Building the Christian academy by Arthur F Holmes( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Until relatively recently, the history of higher education in the West was the story of a Christian academic tradition that played a major role in both intellectual history and the history of the church. Over the last one hundred years, however, we have witnessed the progressive secularization of higher education. George Marsden goes so far as to suggest that the American university has lost its soul. But what was that putatively Christian soul? Precisely what in the Christian tradition has now been lost? And what should we know about that tradition as a condition of practical wisdom for the present? Seeking to answer these questions, Arthur Holmes here explores the Christian tradition of learning, focusing on seven formative episodes in history that pertain to building and maintaining a strong Christian academy today. Holmes's treatment is set within the history of ideas--the early church in a pagan culture, Augustine's formative influence on monastery and cathedral schools, the rise and decline of scholasticism, Renaissance humanism's contribution to the Protestant Reformation, the utilitarian view of education that accompanied the scientific revolution, and struggles with Enlightenment secularization--and incorporates the educational thought of Plato and Isocrates, Clement and Origen, Abelard and Hugh of St. Victor, Aquinas and Bonaventure, Erasmus and the Reformers, Francis Bacon and John Milton, and John Henry Newman. --From publisher's description

"A book that has been needed for several years. It certainly will be one of the most important evangelical books of the year. Nash, Western Kentucky University

Christian philosophy in the twentieth century; an essay in philosophical methodology by Arthur F Holmes( Book )

2 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a book on philosophical methodology. Readers who look for a worked-out position on other problems will be disappointed. It is a book on the methodology of Christian philosophy. Readers who look for the exposition of a Christian philosophy, or for arguments designed to establish a Christian viewpoint, will also be disappointed. All I have attempted to do is to explore the idea of Christian philosophy as it relates to contemporary views of the nature and methods of philosophic inquiry. Exploration is always tentative. It is also propaedeutic to other tasks, but I have done little or nothing here on such other tasks as religious epistemology or apologetics, related as these are. My only excuse is that the line or inquiry undertaken here had to come first; hopefully more will come later
