Elements of statistical mechanics by
D. ter Haar(
Book
)
79 editions published between 1954 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 795 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Following the BoltzmannGibbs approach to statistical mechanics, this new edition of Dr ter Haars important textbook, Elements of Statistical Mechanics, provides undergraduates and more senior academics with a thorough introduction to the subject. Each chapter is followed by a problem section and detailed bibliography. The first six chapters of the book provide a thorough introduction to the basic methods of statistical mechanics and indeed the first four may be used as an introductory course in themselves. The last three chapters offer more detail on the equation of state, with special emphasis on the van der Waals gas; the secondquantisation approach to manybody systems, with an examination of twotime temperaturedependent Green functions; phase transitions, including various approximation methods for treating the Ising model, a brief discussion of the exact solution of the twodimensional square Ising model, and short introductions to renormalisation group methods and the Yang and Lee theory of phase transitions. In the problem section which follows each chapter the reader is asked to complete proofs of basic theory and to apply that theory to various physical situations. Each chapter bibliography includes papers which are of historical interest. A further help to the reader are the solutions to selected problems which appear at the end of the book

The old quantum theory by
D. ter Haar(
Book
)
33 editions published between 1967 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 578 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Old Quantum Theory explains how the classical laws were modified by Planck, Einstein, Rutherford, Bohr, and other contributors to account for atomic phenomena, comprising the development of quantum theory from its start at the very end of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. This book begins by discussing Planck's discovery of his radiation law, followed by Einstein's introduction to quanta. Next is a description of the Rutherford model of the atom and Bohr's postulates, which are confirmed by the FranckHertz experiment. This selection concludes with a description of how Bohr's theory could explain the main features of the atomic spectra. A brief summary of other important developments in the period are also elaborated. This publication is beneficial to students and researchers conducting work on the history of quantum mechanics from the 1900s to the development of wave mechanics

Master of modern physics : the scientific contributions of H.A. Kramers by
D. ter Haar(
Book
)
7 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 282 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Dutch scientist Hendrik Kramers (18941952) was one of the greatest theoretical physicists of the twentieth century and one of a mere handful who have made major contributions across the whole field. Physicists know his name from, among other things, the Kramers dispersion theory, the KramersHeisenberg dispersion formulae, the Kramers opacity formula, the Kramers degeneracy, and the KramersKronig relations. Yet few people know more than the name, or recognize the full depth and range of his contributions. In this book, ter Haar seeks to change that. He presents for the first time anywhere a comprehensive discussion of Kramers's scientific work, and reprints twelve of his most important papers

Lectures on nonlinear plasma kinetics by
V. N T︠S︡ytovich(
Book
)
6 editions published in 1995 in English and Undetermined and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Lectures on Nonlinear Plasma Kinetics" is an introduction to modern nonlinear plasma physics showing how many of the techniques of modern nonlinear physics find applications in plasma physics and how, in turn, the results of this research find applications in astrophysics. Emphasis is given to explaining the physics of nonlinear processes and the radical change of crosssections by collective effects. The author discusses new nonlinear phenomena involving the excitation of coherent nonlinear structures and the dynamics of their random motions in relation to new selforganization processes. He also gives a detailed description of applications of the general theory to various research fields, including the interaction of powerful radiation with matter, collective laser particle accelerators, controlled thermonuclear research, space physics, solar physics, and astrophysics
