Preventive diplomacy : stopping wars before they start by Kevin M Cahill( Book )

22 editions published between 1996 and 2013 in English and held by 575 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The suppression of war has been the primary objective of the United Nations for almost fifty years, and stopping a war before it starts is easier than ending a war already underway. History, however, has shown that military interventions and economic sanctions often do more harm than good. In Preventive Diplomacy, Nobel prize winners, top officials, and revered thinkers tackle these issues and explore the process of conflict prevention from humanitarian, economic, and political perspectives. This cross-disciplinary reader on global politics demonstrates that when new insights and methodologies on public health are applied to the handling of international disasters, the change in policy perspective is intriguing--even hopeful

12 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Featuring twelve original essays by leading practitioners, policymakers, and scholars, the book is a state-of-the-field report on problems, threats, and opportunities facing relief efforts in today's world." "The issues include efforts to improve military/civilian cooperation in large-scale disasters, with special attention to the growth of private armies. How traditional nongovernmental organizations and faith-based agencies adapt to new challenges while retaining their core values is also explored. Ways to strengthen security for humanitarian workers, refugees and internally displaced persons, and those in transition after wars are also presented." "Bringing together diplomatic, military, medical, legal, political, religious, and ethical perspectives from experiences in Darfur, West Africa, Iraq, Pakistan, and other areas, the essays offer an authoritative inventory of where humanitarian relief has been and how it must change to save lives and communities in peril."--Jacket

More with less : disasters in an era of diminishing resources by Kevin M Cahill( Book )

15 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Natural and human-made disasters are increasing around the world. Hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, and resultant famine, floods, and armed conflicts are constant reminders of the frailty of our human race. Global warming may cause whole island states to be submerged as the oceans rise. In the past these acute and recurring crises have been met by the international community responding to UN and media appeals. The economic collapse of nations is now a reality; some of those most affected had been traditional, generous donors to disaster relief operations. It is unlikely-probably impossible-that they will be able to continue to contribute overseas when their own domestic needs are unmet. A recent New York Times front page report suggested that one of the few domestic issues to have bipartisan support was to cut the foreign aid budget. This book analyzes the global economic forecast and the United Nations pattern of philanthropy, provides a case study of how one nation with a tradition of giving will cope in the face of a marked reduction in flexible funds, and then provides thoughtful chapters on new approaches to disaster preparedness and disaster response. Among the contributors are the Director of UNESCO, the UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Assistance, the Secretary General's Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, and fresh suggestions from three well-known global entrepreneurs. Tropical Medicine : a clinical text by Kevin M Cahill( Book )

23 editions published between 1989 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The history of tropical medicine is as dramatic as the story of mankind--with its own myths and legends, with tales of epidemics destroying whole civilizations; and, still today, with silent stealth, these diseases claim more lives than all the current wars combined. Having had the privilege of working throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as in the great medical centers of Europe and the United States, the author presents the essential details for understanding pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, therapy, and prevention of the major tropical diseases. The text, now in its [eighth] edition, has been used for a half-century by medical students, practicing physicians, and public health workers around the world. This fascinating book should also be of interest to a broad, nonmedical readership interested in world affairs. All royalties from the sale of this book go to the training of humanitarian workers"--Provided by publisher
Technology for humanitarian action( Book )

Bound by conflict : dilemmas of the two Sudans by Francis Mading Deng( Book )

2 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since its independence on January 1, 1956, Sudan has been at war with itself. Through the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) of 2005, the North-South dimension of the conflict was seemingly resolved by the independence of the South on July 9, 2011. However, as a result of issues that were not resolved by the CPA, conflicts within the two countries have reignited conflict between them because of allegations of support for each other's rebels. In Bound by Conflict: Dilemmas of the Two Sudans, Francis M. Deng and Daniel J. Deng critique the tendency to see these conflicts as separate and to seek isolated solutions for them, when, in fact, they are closely intertwined. The policy implication is that resolving conflicts within the two Sudans is critical to the prospects of achieving peace, security, and stability between them, with the potential of moving them to some form of meaningful association."--Publisher's description
Human security for all : a tribute to Sergio Vieira de Mello( Book )

11 editions published in 2004 in English and Spanish and held by 152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In original essays, scholars, diplomats, and practitioners take up the issues to which Sergio Vieira de Mello devoted his life. Building on the truth that, in de Mello's words, "neither dignity nor equality could take root in the absence of basic human security," the contributors address a range of practical, political, and philosophical issues. These are organized into four areas of concern: human rights and the rights of the displaced; post-conflict transitions and working with local communities to create leadership and governance; maintaining humanitarian space in conflict zones; and justice and the rule of law."--Jacket
