Minoan and Mycenaean art by Reynold Higgins( Book )

31 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 1,242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This survey describes and illustrates in detail all the significant works of art and architecture of ancient Crete and Mycenae and of the Cycladic Islands. An important event in the history of archaeology was the discovery by Heinrich Schliemann in 1876, of the treasures in the citadel of Mycenae - the home of the legendary King Agamemnon. The excavations of Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, at the palace of King Minos of Knossos was equally important archaeologically. Such treasures that were found are frescoes and gold funeral masks from the third and second millenia BC. This revised edition includes greater coverage of the frescoes from Akrotir, on the island of Thera. Other recent findings are described and illustrated in detail, such as the unique ivory figurine from Palaikastro, objects from the palace of Mallia and the intriguing discovery of Minoan-style frescoes in Egypt

A geological companion to Greece and the Aegean by Michael Denis Higgins( Book )

11 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Using the term geology in its broadest sense, Michael Denis Higgins and Reynold Higgins not only describe the bedrock and the geomorphology of Greece and the Aegean region but also discuss ancient sources of water, stone, and metals in relation to the development of settlements. They explore the links between archaeology and geology, asking how the geological environment shaped settlement in antiquity and how subsequent geological processes have influenced the preservation or destruction of ancient sites. The authors begin with an outline of the geological background and explain some of the geological controversies of the area. They catalogue what could be seen on the surface of the earth and consider, as well, the processes that resulted in those surface features. Their general survey is followed by the treatment of individual sites within settlements. A Geological Companion to Greece and the Aegean includes over 140 maps, as well as space-shuttle photographs, a glossary, and references to original sources. It will interest scholars and archaeologists and will also appeal to those who visit ancient sites and are eager to be fully informed

"This catalogue presents nearly a thousand of the British Museum's extensive collection of ancient Greek terracottas." "An introduction outlines general questions of the evolution of artistic styles, techniques and functions of Hellenistic terracottas. In the main catalogue the figures are grouped into seven major geographic areas according to their known or probable place of production, and further subdivided as appropriate. The introduction to each section discusses findspots, acquisition history and general characteristics of the particular production area. Each individual piece is then fully described and discussed." "The black and white plates illustrate every example, while the colour plates offer a representative selection of the range of clays found in the terracottas published here and also of the coloured pigments used in their decoration."--Jacket
