Women of the forest by Yolanda Murphy( Book )

31 editions published between 1974 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,583 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When it originally appeared, this groundbreaking ethnography was one of the first works to focus on gender in anthropology. The thirtieth anniversary edition of Women of the Forest reconfirms the book's importance for contemporary studies on gender and life in the Amazon. The book covers Yolanda and Robert Murphy's year of fieldwork among the MundurucU people of Brazil in 1952. The Murphy's ethnographic analysis takes into account the historical, ecological, and cultural setting of the MundurucU, including the mythology surrounding women, women's work and household life, marriage and child rearing, the effects of social change on the female role, sexual antagonism, and the means by which women compensate for their low social position. The new foreword - written collectively by renowned anthropologists who were all students of the Murphys - is both a tribute to the Murphys and a critical reflection on the continued relevance of their work today

The dialectics of social life: alarms and excursions in anthropological theory by Robert F Murphy( Book )

30 editions published between 1971 and 1980 in 3 languages and held by 784 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a sweeping synthesis that takes the reader from the ideas of Hegel, Marx, Freud, Durkheim, and Simmel to modern anthropology, Robert Murphy lays bare the failures of established social science and charts the new directions that theory must take. The author believes that academic social inquiry has produced a partial and distorted picture of social reality. He argues instead for a complete and critical view of the processes of society that would draw from the insights and methods of a non-Marxian dialectic philosophy. To Professor Murphy, contradictions between ideology and behavior are not signs of social malaise or symptoms of revolution but are existential to humanity. From this vantage he sees the tendency of all societies to be toward imbalance and movement--not toward stability."--Dust jacket

From the early Cold War years through the social unrest and activism of the 1960s, American anthropology expanded considerably in size and outreach, becoming spectacularly global and cross-cultural in its interests. Complex societies and communities became increasingly popular subjects of inquiry; the influence of sociological methods upon fieldwork and interpretation grew; a reimagined cultural evolution emerged; and a pervasive interest in the broader forces of culture change shaped research, writing, and theory throughout the quarter century.
