For many faculty the desire and need to go abroad is inherent in the nature of their discipline. For others the thought of going abroad for scholarly purposes is completely alien. This book, which was sponsored by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, looks in depth at the international experience of American faculty. Goodwin and Nacht examine the type of faculty who go abroad and their reasons for doing so, the incentives and the disincentives for faculty travel abroad, the attitudes prevalent on US campuses toward such activities, the special obstacles and risks faced by faculty who commit themselves to an international experience and the effects of foreign experience among the faculty on the internationalisation of US campuses. In preparing the book, the authors conducted extensive interviews with faculty at thirty-seven institutions of higher education

Abroad and beyond : patterns in American overseas education by Craufurd D Goodwin( Book )

7 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 348 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An Institute of International Education-commissioned study of the reasons for the rapid growth of U.S. college student study abroad in the 1980s features case studies of effective programs and suggests ideas for planning and evaluation of study abroad by U.S. colleges and universities. Focus is on the integration of international study into scientific, professional, and graduate fields. Reasons for the growth include: young Americans want to understand the world in which they live; foreign study gets less expensive as the dollar grows stronger; America's views of other nations have softened; and foreign travel is now very familiar. Topics include: "the point of it all" (educational and social goals and potential accomplishments, institutional and administrative goals and potential accomplishments, and institutional renewal); "ways to do it" (total immersion, brief stays, and U.S. facilities abroad); "tasks to be done" (for faculty, department, and central administration); "some questions to consider" (appropriate approach, focus, reciprocity, etc.) "innovation" (in the liberal arts, science and technology, and graduate and professional); "where to go for help" (national organizations, models for a modest beginning, the overall scene); and conclusions and recommendations (the object lessons at hand and specific advice to campus officers). The appendix lists institutions visited in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, and Washington, D.C. An index is provided. (Sm)

Fondness and frustration : the impact of American higher education on foreign students with special reference to the case of Brazil by Craufurd D Goodwin( Book )

7 editions published between 1984 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 74 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The effects of U.S. higher education on foreign students from Brazil were investigated in 1982. Attention was directed to: changes in attitudes toward the U.S. and Brazilian economies, and especially economic relations with the United States; ongoing ties of foreign alumni to the United States and to the colleges attended; and the impact of changed social, political, or economic views on the individual. Interviews were conducted with foreign student undergraduates; graduate students of business and management; graduate students in engineering and other technical fields; and doctoral candidates in a range of fields. None of the students regretted having studied in the United States. However, least happy outcomes were reported by undergraduate alumni, and many reported alienation from Brazilian society upon their return. Graduate school alumni had a much more uniformly positive experience. Many Brazilians were positively affected by U.S. business schools' emphasis on problem solving. Graduate engineering alumni felt that U.S. training put them at the cutting-edge of technology. Post-return frustrations emerged in dealing with government regulations and in continuing work in advanced problems. Recommendations for U.S. government, American colleges, and national/international organizations are included. (Sw)
