Sociolegal control of homosexuality : a multi-nation comparison by D. J West( )

21 editions published between 1997 and 2010 in English and held by 1,739 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sociolegal Control of Homosexuality, the most complete and up-to-date treatment of the subject, includes information from areas that are not often covered in English-language publications. Its examination of the sociological, historical, and philosophical trends in the attitudes of 20 nations toward male and female homosexuality includes diverse sampling of legislation, both proscriptive and liberal, in a variety of nations; effects of the rise of fundamentalist religious movements on homosexuals; relevance of new scientific information regarding biological factors in sexual orientation; and revolutionary moves against discrimination in countries once known as repressive, such as South Africa and Russia." "This interdisciplinary, cross-cultural survey, copiously detailed and referenced, will be of interest to lawyers, social scientists, psychologists, sex researchers, criminologists, and social psychiatrists, as well as students in academic courses that touch upon any of these fields."--Jacket

Present conduct and future delinquency; first report of the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development by D. J West( Book )

17 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 634 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first phase of an 8-year longitudinal study of the onset and development of delinquency and behavior problems recruited 400 eight- and nine-year-old boys in a densely populated working class urban district. Assessment was made through psychological tests, teachers' and psychiatric social workers' reports, and parent interviews and questionnaires. Results suggested that family income and social level influenced the boys' conduct and performance more than personal and psychological factors did. For example, boys in families rated socially handicapped almost never obtained the best conduct rating; in addition, 76% of these boys tested below average in intelligence as opposed to 42% of the rest of the sample. Information gathered concerned the neighborhood and the subjects studied, conduct and personality at age 8, adversities of home background, and special criminogenic factors. (Jd)
