A course in modern linguistics by Charles Francis Hockett( Book )

133 editions published between 1958 and 2002 in 5 languages and held by 1,659 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book covers a wider range of topics than any other recent work in English. In general it is clearly written; in spots it is even entertaining, which is more than one has a right to expect in a textbook. Hockett has an enviable gift for introducing topics which are novel to the general reader and making them understandable. The recapitulation of new terminology and the exercises at the end of chapters are also a pedagogically commendable device. One senses that this book has grown out of the practice of a stimulating and successful class lecturer
Refurbishing our foundations : elementary linguistics from an advanced point of view by Charles Francis Hockett( )

14 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 1,504 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This essay challenges several patterns of thinking common in twentieth-century linguistics. The most pervasive of these is our habit of looking at language from the point of view of the speaker. When we take, instead, that of the hearer, matters fall into place in a new way. In syntax, we are led to examine the evidence available to hearers for interpreting what they hear, and this reveals both the true nature and the locus existendi of "deep structure". Chomsky's 1957 diagnosis of the then prevalent syntactic theory is upheld, though his proposed remedy is not. The principle of Gestalt percep

The quantification of functional load : a linguistic problem by Charles Francis Hockett( Book )

8 editions published between 1961 and 1966 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An approach to the quantification of the functional load carried by the sounds of a language in distinguishing one utterance from another. By applying algebraic grammar and matroid lattice theory, criteria are obtained which are satisfied by three measures of entropy used by Shannon in information theory (measured in binits, in shannons, and as relative entropy). The method can be used to measure the work of phonemes, allophones, or components, and should therefore be useful regardless of the outcome of present disputes in the field of phonology. Subjective impressions suggest that there is a balance point in speech between the force of least effort, making for lowest redundancy, and the practical need to be understood, pressing for lower entropy. Research is suggested to test this hypothesis and discover whether it applies equally to all speech communities.
