Central banking at a crossroads : Europe and beyond by C. A. E Goodhart( )

11 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 1,174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reflects on the innovations that central banks have introduced since the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers to improve their modes of intervention, regulation and resolution of financial markets and financial institutions. Authors from both academia and policy circles explore these innovations through four approaches: 'Bank Capital Regulation' examines the Basel III agreement; 'Bank Resolution' focuses on effective regimes for regulating and resolving ailing banks; 'Central Banking with Collateral-Based Finance' develops thought on the challenges that market-based finance pose for the conduct of central banking; and 'Where Next for Central Banking' examines the trajectory of central banking and its new, central role in sustaining capitalism.--

Banking stability measures by Miguel A Segoviano( )

18 editions published between 2004 and 2009 in English and held by 390 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper defines a set of banking stability measures which take account of distress dependence among the banks in a system, thereby providing a set of tools to analyze stability from complementary perspectives by allowing the measurement of (i) common distress of the banks in a system, (ii) distress between specific banks, and (iii) distress in the system associated with a specific bank. Our approach defines the banking system as a portfolio of banks and infers the system's multivariate density (BSMD) from which the proposed measures are estimated. The BSMD embeds the banks' default inter-de
Default, credit growth, and asset prices by Miguel A Segoviano( )

12 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 377 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper uses a Merton-type estimate of the probability of default (PoD) for the main banks in a sample of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and middle-income countries as a proxy for the fragility of their banking systems. Based on theory and stylized facts, the paper explores a range of financial and real variables that explain such PoDs across time. We find property price fluctuations and bank credit to be important explanatory factors. There is two-way interaction between these variables and a clearer relationship when the variables are entered as a deviation from trend. The lag structure between such developments and PoDs is long and varies widely across countries. The paper assesses the implications of these findings for economic policy

Financial crises, contagion, and the lender of last resort : a reader by C. A. E Goodhart( Book )

14 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and held by 311 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Financial crises, often of an apparently "contagious" nature, have become more frequent. The monetary authorities, especially central banks, and, in the international context, the International Monetary Fund, have had to decide how to handle them. This has revived interest in the analysis of the role of a Lender of Last Resort (LOLR). On the one hand, such LOLR support actions have been accused of contributing to the currently increased frequency of (systemic) crises. By providing a safety net for banking activities, they are said to encourage excessive risk taking (moral hazard), thus provoking the very crises they are supposed to prevent. On the other hand, the (surprisingly) fast recovery experienced after (most of) these crises may, perhaps, be attributed to the safety net provided by LOLR facilities, which may have dampened real effects by containing contagion

Based on special access to the archives of the BCBS and interviews with many of its key players, this book tells the story of the early years of the Committee from its foundation in 1974/5 right through until 1997 - the year that marks the watershed between the Basel I Accord on Capital Adequacy and the start of work on Basel II. In addition, the book covers the Concordat, the Market Risk Amendment, the Core Principles of Banking and all other facets of the work of the BCBS. While the book is primarily a record of the history of the BCBS, it also provides an assessment of its actions and efficacy. It is a major contribution to the historical record on banking supervision"--
The operation and regulation of financial markets( Book )

17 editions published between 1987 and 1997 in English and held by 243 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Financial markets in Britain, and elsewhere, are in the midst of a process of fundamental structural change. The resulting shifts in the behaviour of such markets will require the authorities, in turn, to revise their regulatory and control methods. This book incorporates a series of articles by leading British monetary economists to examine both the implications of such structural changes and also to model the current working of these markets. Within this unified framework, the articles range from descriptive accounts of recent developments in bank supervision and in the structure of the London capital markets to more formal econometric studies of the inter-relationships between money and other economic variables, and of the workings of financial markets. This provides a showcase to exhibit the most up-to-date research of leading British monetary economists
