Religion and the making of society : essays in social theology by Charles Davis( Book )

18 editions published between 1993 and 2004 in English and held by 528 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this book a leading theologian provides an account and a critique of contemporary thinking on the function of religion in society. Davis begins with the thesis that society is a product of human agency, which raises immediately the questions of the meaning of modernity and of the function of religion in that context. The linguistic and pragmatic orientation of modern philosophy and social theory lead to a discussion of religious language and of praxis, with a stress upon the importance of narrative and of social practice as vehicles of meaning. A connection is made here with Alasdair MacIntyre's analysis and defence of the rationality of tradition. Whether modernity is an incomplete project, as Habermas would have it, or a mistaken universalism, as the post-moderns maintain, is debated under the heading of human identity, both individual and collective, and in as examination of the formation of the modern self. The practical relevance of the theoretical analyses comes to the fore in a critique of Michael Novak's attempt to make 'democratic capitalism' into an ideal, and in an original attempt to ground religious hope in communicative rationality. The sub-title of the book in intended to indicate that one of the forms of social theory is a theology that takes its starting-point from social and political life. Paradoxically enough, as the author shows, the post-modern rejection of secularity can be interpreted as a return from the secular to the supernatural."--Jacket

Liturgy and doctrine; the doctrinal basis of the liturgical movement by Charles Davis( Book )

22 editions published between 1960 and 1966 in English and held by 446 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a small book, but its length does not indicate the limits of the scope of its importance; it could, and may, easily prove a key work with regard to the development of the Church in this country. For it sets out, with the utmost simplicity and clarity, the essential elements in the main modern movement of Catholic self-renewal. Catholicism fails to impress--as it once did impress--because Catholic life is impoverished. We underestimate the power of ideas and the importance of vigorous intellectual activity. And this we do partly because our thinking no longer has the symbolic richness provided by the Bible and the liturgy. And this happens because we don't read our Bibles and are unable to take our proper part in the liturgy. It is therefore no accident that the theological revival, the liturgical revival and the biblical revival are going hand in hand. This book explains just how they do so; and why these things are not exotic extras for the crank to make a hobby of, but an indispensable part of restoring man to a healthy wholeness."--Cover p.4

The promise of critical theology : essays in honour of Charles Davis by Marc P Lalonde( )

18 editions published between 1995 and 2009 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Written in tribute to one of the foremost theologians in the English-speaking world, the essays in The Promise of Critical Theology address the question: Can critical theology secure its critical operation without undermining its foundation in religious tradition and experience? Is "critical theology" simply an oxymoron when viewed from both sides of the equation?" "From Marc Lalonde's introductory essay which delimits Davis' fundamental position, that the primary task of critical theology is the critique of religious orthodoxy, the essays examine Davis' distinction between faith and belief and build upon the promise of critical theology as inextricably bound to the promise of faith. They ask: What is its promise? What particular religious ideas, themes, stories are appropriate for its concrete expression? How can the community of faith receive its transformative message? What might be the contribution of other religious traditions and philosophies?"--BOOK JACKET
What is living, what is dead in Christianity today? : breaking the liberal-conservative deadlock by Charles Davis( Book )

5 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

That the entire reform and renewal movement in contemporary Catholicism is foredoomed is only one of the many controversial judgments in this highly controversial book. It is, however, much more than merely a book about current Catholic developments; it is a book that confronts the issue of Christianity's very survival as a religious force in the modern world. This is Charles Davis's most constructive and creative theological work to date. It critiques and demolishes only that it may redevelop and rebuild

The making of a Christian; five lectures on Christian initiation by Charles Davis( Book )

5 editions published between 1964 and 1966 in English and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a situation such as our own, when society is suffering so much from lack of a valid life of ritual and symbol, the Church's living tradition of initiation into the meaningful mystery of existence offers more abundant life not only to those who are formally her members; a truly liturgical Christian life, and a truly living Christian liturgy, can offer much even to those who as yet see both from outside. So that this book has significance far outside the area of explicitly professed Christianity. But it is to the Christian that it is first addressed. Baptism and Confirmation, as initiation into the glorious mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ and the power to show it forth in the world, here and now--this is the theme
